Kayden James may have missed out on her happy ever after. But, as a successful marriage and family therapist, at least she can help other people find theirs. Now that her career has taken off, Kayden is finally ready to put the past behind her. . . until it strolls into her office unexpectedly one day. The last thing Kayden needs is for her ex-boyfriend to stir up old feelings. She’d rather stay a single cat lady than let him break her heart again.

Liam has spent a long time living with one regret—letting Kayden slip through his fingers. He’s determined to make amends for the way he treated her all those years ago, but he’s finding it hard to melt her icy exterior. If he can just convince her to trust him and see that he’s changed, their love finally has a chance of coming full circle.

 Excerpt

A combination of relief and confusion washed over Kayden while she processed the information. Her brain registered a jumbled mess of contradictory emotions ranging from sadness to anger to happiness.

Liam withdrew his hand. “That’s all in the past,” he said, reaching for his burger. He took a big bite and stared off into the distance.

“You said you work nearby. Where?”

“The University of Colorado. I teach computer science at their Denver campus.”

Kayden let out a low whistle. “I’m impressed. What’s your area of expertise?”

“Database Management Systems.”

“Sounds complicated.” She finished eating her fries. “It wouldn’t be my idea of fun, but I bet you find the subject fascinating.”

He grinned. “Not as fascinating as your job. In my line of work, it’s extremely rare for a computer to get mad and storm out of the room.”

Kayden gave him a playful elbow to the ribs. “Very funny.” Her lips twitched, struggling to contain the laughter, until it burst out and engulfed them. Soon they giggled like two long lost friends instead of estranged exes.

Shane cleared away their plates. “Any dessert for you today?”

“No, thank you,” Kayden answered.

“I’ve got this,” Liam replied as Shane slid the check on the bar between them. He placed the money he extracted from his wallet on the counter. “Keep the change.”

“Thanks. You folks enjoy the rest of your day.”

~~~~
Liam followed Kayden out of the restaurant and into the sunshine, feeling a little less guilt-ridden than when the day had begun. He stepped lightly and inhaled the aromatic pansies blooming in one of the many large flower pots dotting the sidewalk along the path to Elway Plaza.
He eased his sunglasses onto the bridge of his nose. While they walked, he admired the captivating woman beside him and thanked God for the opportunity to make amends for the way he’d treated her.
“This is my stop. Thank you for lunch.”
“You’re welcome.”
“I guess I’ll see you around.” She turned for the door.
“Wait!” He withdrew the wallet in his back pocket and pulled out his business card. “Give me a call sometime. Day or night.”
Kayden read aloud the name on the card: Liam Pierce, PhD.
He slowly stepped away, wishing he had a camera to capture her radiant smile. “Goodbye, Dr. James.”
Snowball’s Christmas Book Blitz
Snowball
Snowball’s Christmas
Kristen McKanagh
Published by: Kensington
Publication date: September 29th 2020
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance
The Purrfect holiday awaits…
Snowball–an aptly named bundle of feline fluff–is thankful to be spending her first Christmas in the comfort of Weber Haus, the Victorian B&B run by Miss Tilly. Emily Diemer, who cooks for the guests, dotes on Snowball, but she’s not thrilled about another new arrival at the B&B: Miss Tilly’s nephew, Lukas. Which is odd, because Snowball’s animal instincts tell her that Lukas and Emily should definitely be friends.
Everything Emily needs is in this quaint community–including, she hopes, the chance to open her own bakery one day. She doesn’t think much of Lukas for leaving his aging aunt to struggle while he jets around the world taking photographs. But now that he’s here, helping to spruce up the property and getting mixed up in Snowball’s antics, she begins to soften a little. Until she learns what he has planned…
Lukas is going to sell Weber Haus so that Miss Tilly can retire. But Snowball is certain that this B&B, and these people, are supposed to be her forever home. Somehow she has to get these stubborn humans to see things through the wisdom of a cat’s eye and a kitten’s loyal, loving heart…
EXCERPT:
At her car, her good mood took a back seat to frustration. The fob on her key chain was dying, which meant it didn’t always let her in right away. After four or five clicks, she finally gave a grr of annoyance and opened the door with the key.
“Wait.”
No mistaking the deep voice of the man from the parking lot. No way could he be talking to her, though, so she went to get in.
“Emily.”
He is talking to me.
Surprise tinged with more delight than she’d let herself acknowledge had her pausing to look over her shoulder. “How did you know my name?” she called as he jogged down the last few steps.
He waved back up at the slope. “That man called your name earlier.”
And he’d paid attention? Wow. A blush warmed the skin of her cheeks, making the sting of the cold air against her bite more. “Listen, I’m flattered and everything, but I’m running late.”
He paused on a word, mouth open, then his eyes crinkled as he grinned. “I’m not asking you out.”
Oh. Disappointment dropped over her like snow falling off branches on her head. Kerfloop. Followed swiftly by embarrassment. The heat crept back up her cheeks, but for a much less fun reason. “Okay . . . What can I help you with?”
“Actually, I’m here to help you.”
Help her? With what? She raised her eyebrows in question.
“I believe you’ve picked up a small passenger in your purse.”
“My—” Realization rushed in with all the subtlety of a blizzard, and she closed her eyes in resigned horror. “There’s a kitten in my purse. Isn’t there?”
She opened her eyes in time to catch the full impact of her stranger’s full-bodied laugh, his eyes alight with humor. “Does this happen to you often?” he asked.
“Only since this one arrived on our doorstep.” More gently than she’d been handling it until now, she swung her purse around and opened it wide. Sure enough, two blue eyes stared back at her with all the innocence of angels.
“Snowball. You’ve got to stop this,” she admonished as she lifted the small kitten out. Cuddling the ball of fluff against her chest, she lifted her gaze to her helpful stranger. Right in time to see him with a camera up to his eye. A soft click sounded as he snapped a picture.
“Uh— No, thanks.” She lifted a hand to block any more.
“I’m only getting the cat in the shot. I promise.”
Zero for two. First, he wasn’t chasing her down because he was interested, and now he only wanted pictures of the cat. My ego is going to need some chocolate therapy if this keeps up.
About the Book
Dashing. Funny. Confident. Empathetic.
Two different men share these traits. Which one will Nikki pick?
Nikki had two goals in life: to become a famous wedding chef and to find love. She always felt that only one of these goals was realistic, while the other seemed like a dream influenced by her years of being a server at other people’s weddings in downtown New York City. But which goal would it be? Would it ever be her turn to wear the wedding dress?
Nikki wasn’t just trying to find a husband, she was looking for love. Or, rather, she was interviewing to find it – on first dates, twice a week. At the same restaurant. At the same table. With the same rehearsed lines and questions. But with different men. After a year, she was a pro at first dates and judging which men were right for her: none.
But then it happened. Nikki actually asked a guy out on a second date. Was she finally on the path to love? He was, after all, dashing, funny, confident, and empathetic – easily checking all of her boxes.
But then it happened … again. This time by happenstance. A second date with a different guy. He, too, was dashing, funny, confident, and empathetic – but in a different way. Nikki was in trouble. That lofty goal of finding love had backfired. Now, she was in love with two different men.
Love is the sweetest adventure. One with more ingredients than just check-boxes. But when faced with two different recipes for love, which one will Nikki choose?
My review
If you have a mystery to solve, you better go ahead and call Maisy. The cute and spunky Maisy is a determined fourth grader who loves being a good little detective. She’s been learning from some of the best detectives, and even has a cherry lollipop behind her ear. Now, her parents have surprised her with a Mystery Manor weekend.
As she packs for the trip, she can hardly believe her luck! Her parents have bought 3 tickets and even a new trench-coat! She is totally ready and puts on her Fedora hat. What a super-sleuth!
Mystery Manor is a 150 year-old house that is the perfect stage to have a mystery weekend. The hosts have set up great pretend mystery. A jeweled tiara disappears and each of the junior detectives is given the task to solve the case.
The entire time at Mystery Manor is scripted, and the parents are involved. Everyone has a part to play and it’s so much fun for Maisy and her best friend, Veronica. As they look for clues, it doesn’t take them too long to solve the case. But, then another mystery appears!
The children are spooked a little by sounds and something white flying by the window at night. Is the house haunted? What’s really happening? Will Maisy solve this second mystery? Read the book and discover for yourself.
This book will be a fun read for elementary school students (grades 3-6). Children will even love a read-aloud of this story.
The Star and the Shamrock
Book Review: The Star and the Shamrock by Jean Grainger
The Star and the Shamrock is Book 1 of 4 books in a series. The historical fiction begins in Berlin, 1939. Two Jewish children, Liesl and Erich, are leaving using the Kindertransport. This system helped to save Jewish children from the Holocaust.
The desperate Jewish mother had already lost her husband to the Nazis, and promised her children that she would find them after the war. Her husband’s cousin lived in Liverpool and agreed to take the children in as her own.
Elizabeth Klein, the main character, had married a Jewish-German man, but he had died in the first WW. She was a school teacher and had no children of her own. The story is full of action and adventure. The damage of war caused Elizabeth and the children to relocate to Ireland and her family home.
She then starts to teach school in her hometown and meets many Jewish refugees, including Daniel. There is danger, even in her small Irish village and the story is mysterious as the reader doesn’t know what will happen next.
I won’t add any more details, as to spoil the unfolding plot. The book, written by a USA Today Best-Selling author, is well written and held my attention easily. It’s not a hard read, but leaves you cheering for the characters to win in the end.
There are three more books in the series, and I’ll look forward to reading them, too. It’s a feel-good book, and I recommend it.
Halloween
Book Review
Book Review of Halloween Jokes and Riddles for Kids: 500 of the Funniest & Spookiest Child Friendly Halloween Jokes, Riddles, and Activities to Get the Whole Family Spooked. Jenny Jacobs is the author. She’s written 10 chapters that are divided into various Halloween themes.
Your children will soon be planning their Halloween costumes this year. With covid-19 hanging around, it remains to be seen what type of trick-or-treating will be available. But whatever happens, a great book of jokes and riddles can be a celebration in itself.
As I read through this book, I’m not very sure if you would classify these jokes as truly scary, but they are cute. And, telling a good joke will certainly get your children in the Halloween spirit. Is that a pun?
Knock-Knock Jokes:
Knock, Knock! Who’s there? Phillip Phillip who? Phillip my bag with all your candy please!
Here are some cute Question and Answer jokes:
What did the ghost say when he made a mistake? I made a Boo-boo.
Why did the cyclops quit his teaching job? He only had one pupil.
Why won’t a witch wear a baseball cap? There’s no point.
How do you make a skeleton laugh? Tickle her funny bone!
What kind of bear doesn’t have any teeth? A gummy bear!
Riddles
Where do you find Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, Abraham Lincoln, and Thomas Jefferson? In a graveyard.
Did you hear about the mad scientist who got a new lab? He names him Fido!
There are a few mazes and word search puzzles scattered throughout the book, too.
If your children love jokes and riddles, this book will be one of their favorites. They’ll have lots of fun, even if you don’t. I’m giving away my favorite form of humor….sarcasm.
This book comes in paperback and kindle versions. I reviewed the kindle format.
