Gertrude by D.M. Mullan & Kirsteen Harris-Jones

25th July – 11th August

Genre: Children’s

Pages: 32

Publisher: Tiny Tree

MY REVIEW

The artwork in Gertrude really captured my attention right away! I noticed it was so different and because i loveaIdon’t know if I’ll get some of that with my gift box. If you remember, I already reviewed the book, Hector Van Groat. Once again, I love the artwork and unique fonts used. Children love all the various curly fonts and exagerated drawings.

Gertrude lived in a huge treehouse in a lake. In the past there had been wonderful animals, fish, and plants galore in the lake. But, now there was so much trash and slime in the water. It was filledwith garbage. Gertrude decided to clean out the lake herself. She tried to pull the objects out with a rope, but it as too difficult.

Gertrude really needed some help. Do you think that she was able to clean up the lake or did she move to another town? Children will jump right in and want to help Gertrude.

If you think that pollution is not your concern, then like little Gertrude you’ve got lots to learn. She lies in her treehouse like the laziest lump, and shouts from her hammock across the whole dump: “Are you totally crazy? Are you out of your tree? It’s not that I’m lazy, it’s just not up to me!”

Excerpt

I am called Snowball The Sherlock Rabbit, after Sherlock Holmes the famous detective. In my rabbit community you could say I am, in a small way, as famous as he was. I solve crimes and mysteries. One day I was outside my rabbit house, which is cozy and just planned for me and perhaps a female rabbit. I had just decided to plant a few carrots to see if I could grow them.

As Jimmy struggles to deal with this shocking development, murder and mystery unravel in the academy. Caught in the middle of everything, Jimmy realizes that a larger evil is afoot and that only two things can stop it: himself and the ghost in his head…

MY REVIEW

Young Adults and some Middle Grade students will love this book, filled with adventure. They’re going to be looking for more in this series, because of the book’s creativity. Each and every page draws the reader in so that they really can’t find a good place to stop. “Just one more minute” will be the excuse we give for staying up too late to keep reading.

Jimmy Chartron and the Lost Key Keystone is mysterious, a little scary, and oh, so interesting! I found myself reading quickly because I wanted to see what was going to happen next. Picking a book filled with danger and excitement? This is the one for you!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Author J.T. Michaels has always loved storytelling, no matter the medium. Being immersed in a different world, whether it’s through books or video games, has also been an obsession for him. Years after writing for his school magazine, he discovered he wanted to create his own worlds for readers, and his journey to fantasy writing began with Jimmy Chartron and the Lost Keystone, the first volume in his epic fantasy series.

J.T. gets inspiration for his books from everything around him, incorporating his friends as character ideas to make his stories as relatable and realistic as possible. He hopes his young readers come away from his stories having escaped from the real world for a bit and with a spark of magic that lasts long after the book is closed.

When he isn’t writing enchanting fantasy novels for teens, J.T. enjoys running and spending time outside in the sunshine and hunkering down in a bookstore or library on rainy days. He lives in British Columbia, Canada, where he likes to indulge in a great cup of coffee. Jimmy Chartron and the Lost Keystone is his debut novel, the first in a planned fantasy trilogy.

In 1939 Poland, a young girl is asked to give up one of these and accept the other without understanding why. However, what she must part with happens to be her most prized possession—a precious gift given to her by her father before he died.

The child’s mother then teaches the girl a “game” to prepare her for what is to come. As the Nazis invade the country, the mother is forced to make a heartbreaking sacrifice.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Pat Black-Gould, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist and an author. Her short stories have appeared in several literary journals and anthologies.

Many years ago, Pat heard a powerful story that haunted her until she committed it to paper. The Crystal Beads was first published in Jewish Fiction. net in 2020. The short story then won first-place honors in two writing competitions conducted by the National League of American Pen Women, Washington, D.C.

The first was an award by the Pen Women Florida State Association. She then received the Flannery O’Connor Short Story Award as part of the National Biennial Letters in Competition. Pat felt it important to bring the story to a younger audience. At that point, she rewrote it as a children’s book. She hopes that The Crystal Beads, Lalka’s Journey, will do justice to the story she once heard and carry its message to younger generations.

Pat’s writing explores topics such as compassion, tolerance, and diversity. She continues to examine these themes in her upcoming novel, Limbo of the Moon, written with her co-writer, Steve Hardiman.

MY REVIEW

This beautifully written and illustrated book will be emotional for parents and children alike. It was definitely the favorite of all the children’s books I’ve read this year. The powerful story is of a little girl and of the mother who saves her. With WWII upon her, this Jewish mother knows that she and her daughter are not going to be safe. A nearby convent is taking in children to protect them from the Nazis and this mother must prepare her daughter to go there.

The little girl isn’t named in the book and the author isn’t talking about war or Nazis, but adults know what’s going on. The little girl has to trade her Star of David necklace for rosary beads. Her mom tells her that it’s all a game and teaches her about the Catholic faith so that she can really appear to be of that faith if questioned by the Nazis.

This book is sad and tragic, but also triumphant! I highly recommend this children’s book.
