My Review

Seeing the cover of this lovely children’s book made me fall in love with it. I love the old-fashioned illustrations that reminded me of books I had as a child. The artwork is charming and so colorful! Little children will love the pictures, but will also love the story of cute little guardian angels.

The story of five little angels sitting on a cloud is really sweet. The angels are drawn like little children who are looking down on the earth. As they watch various young children they get very happy when the children do something good for others. The angels dance in the clouds. When they see children arguing they worry, but are happy and dancing again after the children hug and make up.

After each action one of the angels would stumble and fall to the earth. They continued to watch out for the children. The story continues and shows how the guardian angels watched from heaven. The story makes it easy to talk to children about angels and why God created them to help us.

Guest Post

My FIRST BOOK ABOUT series is designed for children of all ages to get them interested in the wonders of science; to introduce them to facts, concepts, and ideas that they will encounter over the course of their lives; to engage their natural curiosity about the world around them and how their bodies work. The series is unique because of the range of topics that are covered, from the five senses to backyard life, the oceans, dinosaurs, physics, chemistry, engineering and more. It is a timely series appearing as STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) courses take on greater importance from kindergarten through college.

In creating each book, we try to include both what is taught in schools as well as additional subjects that kids can easily grasp and will find interesting. No page is text heavy. Instead there are easy to understand captions that coordinate with the illustrations. The illustrations serve multiple purposes. For children who have not yet learned to read, coloring the illustrations introduces them to animals and plants, rocks and minerals, their muscles and bones, planets and stars, rocket ships and robots. For readers, the illustrations enhance the captions by helping to explain the science behind them. While the illustrations are technically accurate they never look like they belong in a textbook. Where appropriate we include women and men who contributed to the advancement of science as well as historical links to scientific ideas and advances.

What inspires us is making science accessible to children and proving to them that they can understand it. The series aims to reach out to both boys and girls who are interested in science, engineering, math, medicine, and/or technology. Nothing pleases us more than to hear that our books started a child on the path to becoming a scientist. We research each book carefully and where possible include the latest scientific achievements such as the recent landing of the Perseverance Rover on Mars and CRISPR technology that is the future of genetics At the start of each book we sit down and throw ideas back and forth about what a book should cover with the emphasis on what will interest and fascinate children. We create an outline that reflects the science and what can and should be illustrated. Once there is a final outline we begin our research, followed by sketches and text. Each book is a challenge. Rather than design the Physics books around machines and technical drawings, we were able to explain forces, motion and energy using mostly animals. The Dinosaur book keeps comparing dinosaurs to birds, providing scientific clues to why paleontologists  conclude that birds are living dinosaurs. Using the clues, we ask children if they agree or not, which invites them to think like a scientist. When the same illustration appears in different books with different captions it is our way of saying that the world around us can be looked at from the point of view of biology, chemistry, and physics, as can how the human body works. We are proud of this series and of the awards it has garnered.

Meet the Author:

Evita’s passion is assisting the elderly, especially those living with dementia. Her mission is to help people age in the manner they envision for themselves and not through the lens of others. She works to provide data and resources to assist elders in effectively aging-in-place and equips their families and friends to support their loved ones amidst uncertainty. Working in the elder care field as a licensed nursing home administrator, senior living marketing professional, and Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS), Evita witnesses both elders and families make tough decisions. Some of those decisions result in despair, while others result in healing. The key to enabling elders to live life to its fullest is to help them find their voices and exercise their right to choose.

Evita collaborates with family and friends to ensure that her mother, who lives with dementia, and her father, recently diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment, maintain their voices and make well-informed choices as their disease progresses.

My Review

Many grandchildren are growing up with grandmothers who have dementia. My great-grandchildren are experiencing this. It can be a discouraging and confusing time for these children. Some visits are fine and then some visits are hard or even scary to little ones. The wonderful thing about Does Grandma Remember Me? is that children can see and hear the words about why Grandma is acting different.

The little girl is describing her grandma and how sweet she is. She is a grandma who loves to sit and read to her granddaughter and bake with her, too. But, now the little girl is noticing that her grandma is confused, loses things, and is forgetful. She talks with her mother who explains dementia and helps the little girl to realize that even if her grandma forgets her, she won’t forget to love her grandma.

This pleases the girl. Children need to be reassured when important aspects of their lives change, and this book gives parents a helpful way to share a positive way to handle it.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Travis Peagler is a unique individual, being the youngest of seven kids, raised partially in low-income apartments on the East side of Dayton, Ohio, until the age of nine. Humble beginnings growing up in a somewhat multi-racial neighborhood gave Travis an inimitable perspective on life at an incredibly young age.

His imagination has always been his outlet. Thinking back to grade-school when he was in an uncomfortable situation or when he didn’t handle conflict well, Travis would always replay the scene again in his mind where things played out the way he wished. My Review

Bizzy Bzzz the Bee and Grandpa’s Tea is a sweet children’s book describing how a bee “plays” with Grandpa every morning. Grandpa wakes early to put in his teeth, pray, and then fix his cup of tea. He loves going out on the porch to drink his tea during the sunrise each morning. His young grandson finds it very entertaining to watch the bee bothering his grandpa. As the bee buzzes around Grandpa’s head the little boy thinks it’s funny.

Grandpa doesn’t think it’s funny, because he just wants to drink his tea in peace. Then the little boy thinks of an idea to help his grandpa find peace. He goes to fix a cup of water mixed with honey. He sets it out next to his grandpa and the bee goes right to the cup. He wanted honey just like the honey in Grandpa’s tea. This adorable children’s book has lovely illustrations and shows a great family relationship between grandson and grandfather. Little children will like the way Sparks the dog and the grandson save the day!

Magical Neighbors Audiobook Tour

Author: Mary Ellen Spencer

Narrator: Rosemary Benson

Length: 40 minutes

Publisher: One Night Stand Studios

Released: April 21, 2021

Genre: Children’s; Fantasy

The sudden appearance of a portly gnome on a humdrum, ordinary day definitely threw me for a loop. When this gnome began to speak to me about building him a home in our neighborhood, I know my eyes were as big as saucers, but I tried to appear casual. And I even managed to answer graciously, “Sure, I’d be glad to.” Then other gnomes who wanted to live in my neck of the woods showed up. Fairies, too! They all became part of my world. And their world became part of mine. Life’s been astonishing ever since. Maybe you’ve never met anyone who lives beyond fairy doors. Well, I’d like you to meet my new neighbors. They’re really quite wonderful in their own magical way. Knock on their doors and have a chat. Make friends with fairies and garden gnomes. Come spend some time with us!

She likes to make things—fairy doors and birdhouses from gourds, men of the forest carved from stone, and woodspirits carved into cedar. She enjoys growing things—like trees and hostas and oak leaf hydrangeas. And sometimes stories spill out.

Narrator Bio

Rosemary Benson is an award-winning Audible #1 best-selling narrator, singer, educator, and stage actress. She has appeared across the U.S., Canada, and Italy, and regularly performs with several ensembles and big bands. A passionate learner and audiobook fan, she is at home in many genres. She lives across the river from Philadelphia with her husband in a house full of musical instruments and books.

Q&A with Author Mary Ellen Spencer

Q: Were there any real life experiences behind your writing?

A: Despite suggestions over the years that I had a book in me, I just never quite saw a path forward with that idea. Maybe it was a matter of timing or the absence of the right topic. Now I know why I couldn’t write a book before now. Magical Neighbors has required a lifetime to write, and a certain amount of serendipity. I have borrowed experiences and words and names from my growing-up time to my interactions with my neighbors during the last few years.Q: How did Magical Neighbors come about?

A: Magical Neighbors has been an inspired work. As an avid gardener, I first created a fairy garden, then I built fairy doors and gnome homes. Stories about the fairies who live behind the doors rather magically appeared in my mind. A little girl teared up when I told her a fairy story. A young boy was empathetic to a fairy who was ridiculed and harassed. “I’ll be danged,” I thought to myself, “These stories have power!” My neighbor suggested that I should write those stories down. Write a book! “Hmmmm… Maybe I could… Maybe I should.. Maybe I will…” Then I did. Words and ideas flowed onto a blank computer screen. Of course, I had to do a bunch of rewrites. My editor at One Night Stand Studios was definitely a tough critic. But she made Magical Neighbors so much better!Q: How did you select your narrator?

A: The first time I had Magical Neighbors read aloud to me, I liked the way it sounded, and I thought to myself, “This is good. These are good stories!” I was actually a bit surprised how alive the stories became! That’s when I knew that Magical Neighbors was best read aloud.

One Night Stand Studios stepped up to help me find a narrator. We chose Rosemary Benson from the 53 auditions that were submitted. We knew she was the right one to narrate Magical Neighbors. She was the right voice, and had just a touch of grit, which was perfect. We both smiled when we heard her interpretation of this book which included several accents. Q: Do you believe certain kinds of writing translate better into audiobook format?

A: I think the dialogue in Magical Neighbors makes the audiobook much more vibrant, alive, and interesting. I encourage people to not only read the print book, but listen to it as well. Because the magical neighbors hail from different places, Japan, England, the Wild West and the Deep South in the USA, the narrator created voices to match the character which a casual reader may well not do. Rosemary Benson just kicks Magical Neighbors up a notch so that no nuance goes missing. “Rosemary sounds even better than the voice in my head!” I said. “Wonderful!” Because Meg Roby’s wonderful illustrations can be accessed with the audiobook as a downloadable PDF, the stories take on yet another dimension.Q: Did you give the narrator any pronunciation tips?

A: Yes, I did. Certain names could have been troublesome.Q: Could you envisionMagical Neighbors as a made-for-TV movie series?

A: Yes, I could imagine that maybe Disney could take up the project of a 12-part series for The Disney Channel. The fairies and gnomes would require animation, with voiceover, of course. Each fairy and gnome character could be expanded for a time slot. The scenery is beautiful as well. The Storyteller could be someone 65 or so, maybe Angela Lansbury.Q: Why do you think Magical Neighbors resonates in a listener?

A: Magical Neighbors taps a variety of emotions, emotions that are some of the noble elements of the human spirit. The tap on hearts is a soft one that hints of ways that we should treat each other.

I believe that in Magical Neighbors there are stories that need to be told. Our world does not seem as gentle or as kind as it needs to be. Too much discord. The magical neighbors suggest that doing the right thing is a good thing; that we, too, can stand in the breach for those who cannot defend themselves; that character is not determined from appearance; that we can take action to be helpful and encourage others toward their success.

I received this audiobook as part of my participation in a blog tour with Audiobookworm Promotions. The tour is being sponsored by One Night Stand Studios. The gifting of this audiobook did not affect my opinion of it.

What a charming collection of stories! The author introduces us to each visitor in the fairy garden and the narrator speaks in their unique voice to portray the character. You might expect a higher-pitch fairy sounding voice, but the narrator has a deep, warm voice. Her timing is impeccable as she creates each whimsical scene. The outstanding illustrations are added in a pdf so that you can see the characters. The stories of gnomes and fairies is captivating because they are easy to visualize, even without the pictures. What lovely quiet time or bedtime stories these would make for youngsters.

My Review

Ting Ting, the Girl who Saved China is a lovely picture book with colorful illustrations. The story is centered around the dinner table of Li Li Wang, her parents and grandparents. It’s the eve of Chinese New Year and the family is preparing to celebrate the important holiday. Li Li’s grandfather asks her if she knows the story of their ancestor, Ting Ting Wang? Li Li hasn’t heard that this hero of China was a member of their family.

The grandfather starts telling the story of China and how a monster named Nian terrorized the people there. Nian was a Chinese dragon who would come to different villages and eat all the people’s food and animals and tear down their homes. No one could figure out a way to keep Nian from coming to their village.

Then a little girl named Ting Ting came up with an idea. She tried to tell her friends and others in the town, but no one listened to her. Her family members were afraid when they hear a roaring sound. They knew that Nian was coming their way, but had no way to stop him. Would Ting Ting know what to do? Would Nian eat all their food? This delightful book will entertain and inspire children to be a hero like Ting Ting.
