My Review

In the second book about Kayla: A Modern-Day Princess, we find Kayla washing dishes and looking out the window. As she’s busy washing dishes in her bright tutu, she sees someone high up in the tree. It bothers her that someone is up in the tree and she goes outside to investigate. She yells to the person in the tree and wants them to come down before they break a bone. Then, a little boy jumps down to the ground.

Kayla doesn’t know this child and asks him his name. He tells her that he is Tommie Leigh and that he is new to the neighborhood. He says that his parents are newly divorced and he is living with his dad. He’s not sure, but hopes to see his mom in the summer. Kayla introduces herself as Kayla the Princess. They talk a lot and Tommie says that he sees a therapist because his mom is not around. Kayla says that dance is her therapy. Tommie says that football is also his therapy. Before Tommie rushes off to football practice he volunteers to help Kayla wash dishes.

They become friends and Kayla tells him that he can come everyday to wash dishes at 4 o’clock.

Everyone else has an idea of who she should be, but in the end, she discovers that she is the one who gets to decide.

My Review

Kayla is a sweet little girl and this story is the first part of a five-book series. Kayla lives with her mother and father. Her mother works late many nights and Kayla doesn’t always get to see her at bedtime. This one night, her father lets her wait up for her mother. Kayla imagines that her mother will bring her a present.

When her mother arrives home, Kayla gets up and hears her mother at the stairs. She jumps quickly back in bed before her mother enters the room. Kayla asks her mother if she will get a present. Her mother tells her of a big promotion she has received at work and Kayla is thrilled that her mother’s hard work has paid off. Then, her mother does give her a present. She places a shiny tiara on Kayla’s head and tells her how she is a princess who has a great life ahead.

Kayla sleeps with her tiara on her head and dreams of all the beautiful life she has ahead of her. This is a positive book about family, hard work, and dreams of a wonderful future.

Zebra’s Day Out Review Tour

Zebra's Day Out Banner
Zebra's Day Out Cover

Zebra’s Day Out

by Susan Polites and Gabrielle Scully Illustrated by Rex Patrick

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:   Children’s
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Zebra is excited when he hears that he will be going out to the cafe with Gabrielle and Gran. But there is a lot that Zebra still has to learn about days out. Is a cafe anything like the circus in the picture book? Will he like the food there? Will there be playing?

Extract

Gran and Gabrielle put on their hats and their sunglasses, and they walked to the café. Gran pushed the stroller, and Zebra rode on the top. He was very happy to be outside in the sunshine.

“I wish I was big and strong so I could push the stroller,” he thought. “I would go much faster than Gran!”

They came to the café and sat down at a table. The waiter came, and they all said what food they wanted. “The food will come soon,” said the waiter and moved on. Zebra was cross. He wanted his food NOW. Rainbow didn’t mind waiting, as long as she could have cuddles with Gabrielle while she waited.

Finally the drinks came. The waiter was carrying the milkshakes and coffee on a tray. There was a plate of muffins too. Zebra thought the waiter looked like the circus juggler in the storybook.

“I want to be a juggler too!” he thought.

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

Susan Polites is a freelance story-writer, and her ten-year-old granddaughter Gabrielle Scully likes writing stories too. When they spend days together they often share in the adventures of Gabrielle’s toy-friends. During the pandemic lockdown in Melbourne they were unable to meet in person, so they decided to work together remotely and write down some of the toy-friends’ adventures. Gabrielle’s great-grandfather Rex Patrick, an architect and artist, had done a series of illustrations when he first heard about the adventures, and Gabrielle added some of her own drawings to make the story into an early-childhood picture book, and a family project.

My Review

Gabrielle’s mother will be out for a little while, so Gran comes over to stay with him. Gabrielle wanted to bring his favorite toys when they all headed out for the day. Zebra was the most important toy, but sometimes he caused trouble. And, this time was no different.

At the cafe, Zebra caused trouble by throwing the water in the air and being naughty. Gran paid quickly and they all went to have a picnic outdoors. This was much more pleasant, because Zebra had grass, which was what he wanted. Children will love the story of the child and his favorite toys and the imaginative tale of their adventures.

Guest Post: Writing A Children’s Book

On a Saturday morning, I woke up early. The freshly brewed coffee was waiting for me; it was so comforting. I cannot remember a time that I did not drink coffee in the mornings…even as a child on “wash day” I would have a cup with my mom (it was mostly milk!). I took my second cup of coffee upstairs to my office and sat at my desk. My children’s book, The Adventures of Molly & Ollie: Moving Day, was almost ready to send to the publisher.

I reached for my worn notebook and took it with my coffee to the futon in my office. That was where I pondered all kinds of ideas and challenges. Nostalgia set in as I flipped through the pages. It contained all my thoughts for a story about a little girl having to move—a subject I am familiar with. I find the planning pyramid, with its jagged lines going up the page and down for the plot arc. I looked over the notes to see how close the book came to the plan.

When I came across the research notes for Molly’s animals, it made me smile. I looked over at the shelf full of toy animals that continually gave me inspiration and encouragement (and still do!). The research on animals was so important. Each one of Molly’s animals needed to be special in their own way and not picked at random.

Towards the back of the notebook, I found the character notes for both Molly & Ollie. I had not read those notes for a while. Re-reading them now, made me realize how important it was to know who they were for the action and voice of the story.

I took a few moments to reflect over this process of writing a children’s book. I looked up and smiled at my large white board that my husband made. The 28 pages for the book was marked off as a grid. It worked perfectly for establishing the flow of the story. Different colors for different elements and crude drawings for possible illustrations.

I went back to my desk and opened my computer. I read the manuscript one last time…then clicked send.

My Review

The Adventures of Molly & Ollie Moving Day is going to be loved by many children. Moving away can be so traumatic for children as they leave their friends and everything they’ve grown to know and love. In this adorable book, Molly is a little girl who is saying goodbye to everything. She looks around at the boxes in her room and sees a box marked Molly’s Books, Molly’s Clothes, Molly’s Animals, and one box marked, “Open Me First.”

Molly is very sad because everything will be different. Just then the doorbell rings and her friend comes over and brings a yummy plate of chocolate chip cookies. As she later waves goodbye to her friend she says everything will be different.

When she arrives in her new town, the car pulls up to her new home. It does look different. But, when she goes upstairs it’s nice to see that someone marked her door, “Molly’s Room” in bright purple letters. She goes in and there are the boxes of her Animals, Clothes, and Books. There is also the box marked Open Me First.

Molly is startled to hear a “Who” sound. She turns around to see an owl in the window. She answers the owl when he says, Who are you? She asked the owl who he is, too. He said his name is Oliver Winston Howell III, but Molly calls him Ollie, for short. She is sad and tells Ollie how everything is different. Your children will want to read this book and find out how Molly and Ollie become good friends. It will be fun for them to learn how although things are different, they are also the same.

My Review

This is just the type of book that children will love to read again and again. The children will be drawn to the cute illustrations with the funny expressions. There is nothing more enticing to middle grade boys and girls than this silly kind of humor.

The story is narrated by a little boy named Abe who has a big family and a small house. He has three sisters and twin brothers. They’re all forced to live upstairs in the attic room, because their cousin Celia is moving in. She’s a college student who lost her dorm room and takes the girl’s room. They all end up together with a sheet curtain hanging between the two sides of the room.

Abe’s dad has a cup of coffee with a peel-off reward for a free doughnut. On the back of the reward card some legal words say that it is the equivalent of 1/20th of a penny. Abe comes up with the idea that this means he should be able to buy 6,000 doughnuts with only $3. He and his student-lawyer cousin show up at the doughnut store and try to cash in. The owner says no and and after some arguing the owners daughter, Marlene throws doughnuts at Abe. Then, everyone in the restaurant gets involved in a huge food fight.

After a video of this food fight goes viral, the Judge Sally tv show offers to bring the two sides on to settle the argument. Celia is going to serve as Abe’s lawyer. The doughnut shop owner has a lawyer given to him by the doughnut store chain, and they are countersuing Abe. This could turn out well or it could be a disaster. What do you think will happen? You’ll want to get this one for your children or grandchildren, because it’s really funny!
