Q: Perfect Moments at Duck Pond Cottage focuses on two brides who decide to have dogs at their wedding. Do you have any personal experience of having animals at a wedding?
A: Yes, I do, as it happens. My husband and I had four dogs at our wedding. That took a bit of organising, although thankfully it wasn’t quite as tense as the events that unfold at Jade and Sarah’s wedding.

Q: You often include animals in your novels. Do you have animals yourself now?
A: I do. I have two ex-battery hens, Miss Green who’s affectionate, and Flora who’s mostly angry, and two dogs, one’s a roughty toughty ex-street dog from Crete and the other’s a cockerpoo who thinks she’s a human. I’d like to have more animals but sadly I don’t have the room.

Q: The Duck Pond Cottage series is set in an animal sanctuary in Wiltshire. It feels very real. Is it based on a real animal sanctuary?
A: Yes it is. It’s based on a dog rescue shelter in Amesbury, Wiltshire, called PALS where I used to volunteer about twenty years ago. Along with the rest of my family I did weekend dog walking and we also adopted a dog from there and helped to rehome some others. PALS doesn’t exist any more, but the Dogs Trust now occupy the buildings where it stood so there is still a sanctuary there.

Q: Do you often use real places in your novels?
A: Yes. I use real counties, so I write a lot about the south coast, such as Dorset and Wiltshire, although I’m not always specific about exactly where individual places are set. But they are usually based on real place.
I was brought up in Bournemouth, and my mum used to say, “we’re really lucky to live between the New Forest and the sea.” I so agree, and I love setting my novels in real places. I’ve used settings such as Corfe Castle and Durdle Door in Dorset and Salisbury Cathedral, Wiltshire, and the New Forest in Hampshire and Wiltshire. I’ll often change names of smaller places just slightly, so for example, Fordingbridge, a real place, becomes Bridgeford, a fictional place.

Q: You have written more than one series of novels. Do characters from your series overlap?
A: Yes, they do. And this is the novel where it happens the most. There are animal sanctuaries in two of my series and the owners often help each other out with rehoming cases.
Also, my Bluebell Cliff series features a hotel which is set high up on the clifftop in Dorset. The Bluebell Cliff Hotel has a mission statement: We’re here to help you make your dreams come true. In Perfect Moments at Duck Pond Cottage, Jade and Sarah the two brides decide to get married at the Bluebell Cliff Hotel.
Reintroducing characters from the Bluebell Cliff, such as Mr B, the conspiracy theorist chef, and Clara King the manager with a penchant for handbags and gorgeous suits, was the best fun I’ve had in ages.

Q: Do you do a lot of research for your novels? And do you like doing it?
A: I do loads of research. Most of it’s interesting, so it’s fun. One of the most interesting bits to do in this novel involved finding out whether you can get married in Salisbury Cathedral. Yes, you can, but there are conditions. And one of the most fun bits was researching types of hen night that involved naked butlers!
