The book starts years before when Donovan Taylor is celebrating his 21st birthday, but gets an unhappy ending. He is caught up in a police raid at a strip club where he’s caught soliciting a prostitute. He’s picked up by his father, who is visibly shaken. His father takes him to a low-class hotel. Waiting for him is his mother, who tells him the sordid tales of her former life as a prostitute. So right of the bat, the book gets a PG13 rating from me.

Back to the present-day: Kennedy is married, but her husband died and then she found out that he was cheating on her and leaving her to blame for his gambling debts. Because her father-in-law also died, Kennedy decided to try to take care of her sweet mother-in-law. Cora wanted to move to Dayton, Ohio, because there were relatives there.

Because they didn’t have any money left, they traveled on a bus to Ohio. During a terrible rain storm, the bus hit a semi and slid down a ravine. Cora and Kennedy were the last two trapped in the bus, but Donovan is the rescuer. What will become of these two brave ladies?

This new novel from Michelle Bolanger is loosely based on the book of Ruth in the Bible. The main story is clearly from Ruth, but there are many modern and extra characters and features. The redemption of the main characters is clear. But, Christian parents may prefer to read it before allowing their teens to do so. Prostitution, infidelity, and sex trafficking are subjects to be discussed.
