Mightier than the Sword

Written by Drew Callander and Alana Harrison

Illustrated by Ryan Andrews (and YOU!)

Publisher’s Synopsis: Wildly funny and inventive, this interactive book pulls you, the reader, into the action. Yes, YOU!

You wake up in the fictional land of Astorya, where stories from our world come to life. You’re a real human being (we assume), and in this fictional world, that makes you a superhero. Armed with your trusty pencil, you have the power to create: what you write, draw, or scribble in the book becomes part of the story!

Only you can rescue Prince S. from the evil Queen Rulette. Aided by the Couriers–a French stoat with dangerous dance moves, a giant dung beetle, a fire ninja, a Pegasus-centaur-cowgirl and a super-intelligent femalien chameleon—you must write, draw, and puzzle your way through a hilarious adventure and prove that the pencil is mightier than the sword.

About the Illustrator

Ryan Andrews lives in the Japanese countryside, with his wife, two kids, and their dog, Lucky. A friendly Kodama or two have been known to take up residence in the giant acorn tree that shades the house. Ryan often works at his drawing desk in the early-morning hours, to the sound of rummaging wild boar and badgers, who come from the surrounding forest seeking out shiitake mushrooms and fallen chestnuts.

Mightier Than The Sword

My Review

The author’s really know how kids think! In Mightier Than The Sword the imagination of a child will be turned loose. Realizing that the target audience is ages 8 through 12, I can immediately see how they will be reading this one more than once.

The reader is the subject of the story. As they travel through an imaginary land there are adventures that just don’t stop. There are many thrilling escapes from danger only to again be tracked down by the villains.

The characters are a unique group and with the great descriptions and illustrations they really come to life. My favorite characters are the Dust Bunnies! I love how the author makes them terrifying.

Puns are everywhere and will keep you chuckling throughout the book. Although there is plenty of comedy and suspense, there is also a good moral to the story. But, the fun part of this one-of-a-kind book is that it’s truly interactive.

The Pencil really is mightier than the sword, because the hero holds his power by using his pencil. What he writes comes to be. If a child thinks about this, they can begin (in a child-like way) to realize the power of words.

I highly recommend this entertaining and educational book to you. Your children will love it!

This is a story of a young girl who learns self-worth by embracing the very “flaws” that make her beautiful. Strawella Berry is a spunky fairy that enters a singing competition only to realize winning doesn’t feel so good when one has to pretend to be someone they are not.

Alejandria Kate wrote How the Strawberry Got Its Seeds with the hope that Strawella’s story inspires children to celebrate being different as well as imparts courage and confidence to any child who has suffered self-esteem issues.

Children always love a story with magic and this one won’t disappoint. This book has vibrant and whimsical artwork that children will enjoy. The colors are so bright and happy, but there is also a wonderful message.

The little fairy Strawella Berry is adorable with her bright red hair and freckles. She loves fluiting, which is a way that fairies make beautiful music. There is an upcoming festival and Strawella really wants to enter.

But because she doesn’t have the perfect peachy complexion, she knows that she doesn’t have a chance. She wishes that her complexion was like the other fairies and feels like her freckles are a problem.

With a disguise she enters the competition and wins. The magic comes and when it does her freckles are revealed. The magic then creates the seeds for the strawberry and Strawella wins the trophy.

She gets her wish and the strawberry got its seeds. It’s a very sweet book that teaches children a good lesson about being different.

Cleo Can Tie A Bow Book Blitz

Cleo Can Tie A Bow

A Rabbit And Fox Story

Children’s Picture Book

Date Published: September 2020

Publisher: Sybrina Publishing

Cleo loves bows. She wears her hair in a bow and decorates her room with bows. Cleo is bow crazy.

Learning to tie a bow is very difficult for some people but Cleo remembers how to do it from a cute story she once heard. It is about a little rabbit with very long ears and a very helpful fox who shows her what to do to keep them clean.

This is the story of how Cleo learns to tie a “bunny ear” bow. You can follow along with the rabbit and the fox to learn to tie a sash or even shoe laces.

Exercises in manual dexterity build self-esteem in children. Knowing how to tie shoe-strings, scarves and more into a bow is a useful and rewarding skill.

“Teach a child a useful skill. Build confidence and self-esteem that lasts a lifetime.”

Eleven-year-old Bao Dang remembers watching in horror four years earlier as Communist soldiers dragged his parents from their home. Now an orphan, he begins a journey to escape the oppressive government of South Vietnam. The owner of a small boat, paid in gold, smuggles Bao and his cousin, Binh Pham, down the Saigon River at night to the South China Sea, where he and over one hundred other “boat people” pack into a trawler designed to hold fewer than thirty. For six days, they face danger from the police, weather, and pirates, not to mention the constant threat of capsizing as they take on water while living only on dry, rationed rice.

Bao, Binh and the others hope a refugee camp in Indonesia accepts them, but there’s no guarantee. Word has it they may be turned away and even towed back out to sea to starve. Eventually finding a safe haven, Bao harnesses the power of music to heal and help endure months of harsh and dangerous living while he and Binh await word from relatives in the United States, hoping they’ll obtain the ultimate gift: freedom.

“…the more conceptual discussion of algorithms is well done, and the story is satisfying and emotionally resonant.” — Kirkus Reviews

My name is Merlin Raj and I live in Sleepy Hollow. Legend has it that a Headless Horseman haunts the town. Usually, I only have to worry about helping my boy, Matthew, to walk at school. But during the spookiest time of year, we’ll tackle the scariest creature of all—big brother.

Boo!

Will learning conditional logic save this family’s Halloween from certain doom?

Appealing to readers of all ages, Merlin Raj and the Drones of Sleepy Hollow is an ILLUSTRATED chapter-book. From artists to astronauts, the jobs of the future will deal with computers. But do kids want to read a coding book? Not as much as dog stories.

With a Computer Science degree and a passion for preparing kids for the future, author D. G. Priya blends technology with animal stories to stimulate a desire to read. Each book in the series introduces a new programming skill. If you or your child like delightful dog tales that explores universally positive themes, including empathy, kindness, dedication, and the importance of being true to one’s self, then you’ll love D. G. Priya’s tail-wagging adventure.

Read an Excerpt

After a rousing “Trick or Treat,” Matthew got some sticky taffy. He plunked it into the pumpkin-shaped plastic bag. He’d also put a second sack on my back, in case he ran out of room. We expected to knock on a lot of homes.

Peter marched up to the front door. He flew the pumpkin-head drone ahead of him. It had a small net hanging from it. Peter reached the lady giving out the candy. He drove the drone in front of the candy bowl in her hands and declared, “Trick or treat!”

“What?” Matthew muttered at my side. “He got two pieces.”

As he walked back toward us, Peter smirked. “Guess who’s going to win?”

“You cheater,” Matthew said.

I nodded in agreement.

“It’s not cheating if I’m just smarter,” Peter said.
