My Review
Historical fiction is my favorite genre and this novella was wonderful! This short book left me wanting more and I’ll be watching for this author’s next book. The story takes place in Wisconsin during the early 1930’s, which was a time of hardship for the dairy farmers who could barely scrape by. A young veterinarian, Katy Wells, had lived a very difficult life and the life she deserved was still not in reach.
At age 12, her uncle threatened to throw her in the workhouse because of her mother’s mistake. She escaped to London and then to America. Little did she know that she was still being followed. Her best friend Lily had a twin brother who was a policeman. Joey wanted to protect Katy and they were falling in love. Between the striking dairy farmers, feuding families, and obsessed foreigners, Katy needed her policeman to protect her.
This story is based on many true events of that time as well as the dilemma of many Irish immigrants. I love how the author used this history to share with us a beautiful story of trust and love.
