ABOUT THE BOOK
Title: The Storm Breaks Forth
Author: Terri Wangard
Release Date: April 6, 2021
Genre: Christian Historical Fiction
World War I rages in Europe, and now the United States joins in. Peter Bloch heads to France with the Wisconsin National Guard, but his wife Maren is the one under attack. She’s German-born, and anti-German hysteria is running high. Simple suggestions for coping with wartime measures lead Maren into an active role in the community, but her service doesn’t help deflect suspicion from her. Zealous patriots target her with a vengeance. Peter caught the eye of a major who seems intent on using him as a spy. He’s been fortunate to avoid injury so far, but these activities are likely to get him killed. Peter and Maren dream of the day they will be reunited, but more and more, that day appears to be a mirage.
Terri Wangard grew up in Green Bay, Wisconsin, during the Lombardi Glory Years. Her first Girl Scout badge was the Writer. These days she is writing historical fiction, and won the 2013 Writers on the Storm contest and 2013 First Impressions, as well as being a 2012 Genesis finalist. Holder of a bachelor’s degree in history and a master’s degree in library science, she lives in Wisconsin. Her research included going for a ride in a WWII B-17 Flying Fortress bomber. Classic Boating Magazine, a family business since 1984, keeps her busy as an associate editor.
This historical fiction book is written from a perspective of German immigrant families who lived in Wisconsin during World War 1. As the drumbeats of war were growing louder, Peter Bloch and his wife Maren feel conflicted. Maren’s father has not completed his citizenship papers and the anti-German hostility is increasing. The author lets the reader know what it was like to be an immigrant in America during war-time. People of German heritage were suspected of not being patriotic enough. Americans turned against other Americans and many German people were put in internment camps.
The author writes from their viewpoint and speaks often of their disgust of the president and the politicians and patriots who were pro-war. The story shares the story of how Peter is drafted to serve and ends up on the front-lines in France. During the horrors of war, Peter and his fellow soldiers live and die in horrible conditions. The book is extremely graphic and talks of blood, guts, body parts, and is hard to read.
The book is a Christian Historical Fiction because it talks about the characters going to church, singing hymns, and trying to follow Scripture. Maren shows Christian forgiveness in the end towards her enemy. There is much drama on the battlefield, and I won’t share what becomes of the main characters, but you may be surprised at the ending.
