My Review

Alicia and her best friend Cathy are excited about the new school year. They are also looking forward to Alicia’s upcoming birthday party. Alicia has been wanting her parents to get her a tablet for quite a while now, and she feels like she is the last one of her friend group to get one. She has been asking them as well as hinting around about her wish.

She hears her friends talking about all of the games that they enjoy on their tablets and is so jealous. She imagines how fun it will be to play along. The birthday is wonderful for Alicia and she receives the tablet that she’s always wanted. Her parents give her her father’s old tablet and she is thrilled. Her parents take plenty of time to show Alicia how to use it and set up a private name and password for the game.

Her parents emphasize how important it is to be safe online and not to reply to anyone that she doesn’t know. Alicia gets the online name for her friends and connects with them with her parent’s help. One friend named Megan is more careless with her social media accounts.

One day at school the librarian is teaching the children how to use school tablet’s to find new books. Alicia warns Megan to stop accessing social media during the presentation, but she doesn’t listen. What will happen next? Will Megan get in trouble? Children will learn about how important it is to be safe online with this book.

Author Bio – Ayşe Osmanoğlu is a member of the Imperial Ottoman family, being descended from Sultan Murad V through her grandfather and from Sultan Mehmed V (Mehmed Reşad) through her grandmother. The Gilded Cage on the Bosphorus is the book that I always dreamed of writing. Ever since I was a little girl… Initially I did not intend to publish – it was written to encourage my children’s interest and sense of pride in their heritage, and to teach them forgotten customs and traditions. I wanted to record stories and memories that my grandfather shared with me of his unique life before they are lost forever, and I also hoped to discover more about the characters and personalities hidden behind faded family photographs… Then one day my father persuaded me that others might enjoy this personal story set during the twilight years of the Ottoman Empire, so it was published and today celebrates its first birthday!

In this scene Prince Nihad is considering how best to influence the fate of his new born son, my beloved grandfather. In Ottoman tradition, where the umbilical cord is placed is of great importance and significance since it will determine the path you follow in life:

“Nihad, it is time to decide where to place the umbilical cord. We should take care of that now, while we are together,” Murad said once the ladies had left. “It is an important decision, for it will influence your son’s fate; I trust you have given the matter some thought?”

Nihad swallowed the slice of peeled apple had been eating. “Grandfather, I must admit that I have no idea where best to place it. I have indeed considered the matter, but have reached no conclusion. Could you possibly give me some advice?” He wiped his fingers on the napkin his kalfa had brought him and put his fruit plate on the table.

Fuad was puzzled. Before Murad could reply to Nihad’s question, he asked: “Baba, what is an umbilical cord?” Selahaddin quietly explained what it was to his younger son – while Nihad scowled at him, irritated at his interruption.

“Whatever you decide will be the right choice, I am sure, my dear Nihad,” Murad finally answered. “I chose to bury your father’s cord in the garden of a school: as you know, I believe that education is of paramount importance in life. Your father has grown into a very learned and knowledgeable man, and he has found much solace in books and philosophy during our long confinement here. So I think I made the right decision in his case.”

Selahaddin nodded in agreement. Then he addressed his son. “We asked for your cord to be buried in the courtyard of the Yahya Efendi Mosque. I prayed that you would grow up to be devout and pious. When I look at you now, my son, I can see with pride that you have indeed become such a man,” he said. Nihad smiled at his father.

“So where was my umbilical cord buried, Baba?” Fuad asked.

“Yours was thrown into the Bosphorus to be taken wherever the current chose, my dear Fuad,” Selahaddin replied.

Fuad looked a little dejected at this. Nihad’s cord had been buried in a holy place with care and deference, while his own, it seemed, had been tossed recklessly into the sea. Murad noticed the expression of bewilderment on his face. “It was done in the hope that you would find your destiny elsewhere, far from the locked gates and high walls of the Çırağan Palace,” Murad said. “You have a lively spirit, dear Fuad. I pray that you will not have to endure a life of imprisonment, as we have had to do, and that your destiny will be very different from ours.” Fuad was happy with this explanation. In any case, his grandfather’s observation was quite true: he dreamed constantly of adventure and exploration.

“There is only one other choice open to you,” Selahaddin said to Nihad. “If you would like your son to love animals and care for them, you can decide to bury the cord in a stable. So, what course will you decide upon for Vâsıb?”

Nihad thought for a moment. “I feel torn between all the different possibilities. Please help me decide, Grandfather! And you too, Father – please help me choose,” he said.

Murad answered first. “Liberty and freedom are precious things, and should never be taken for granted,” he said. “Every man has the right to be free, so my advice is to choose the waters of the Bosphorus. You can ensure that your son grows into a devout and righteous man by teaching him the lessons of the Holy Quran. You can employ the best tutors and scholars to ensure that he becomes an educated man. But you cannot guarantee that Vâsıb Efendi will have liberty and freedom. That is something that, as I myself have learned, lies beyond our control, and it is for this reason that I give you the advice I do.” Selahaddin placed his hand tenderly on his father’s arm. He knew how much he suffered, and how much it hurt him to have to watch his family endure imprisonment at the hands of Abdülhamid.

“I agree with my father,” Selahaddin said. “He speaks wisely, and from experience of life.”

Nihad, moved by his grandfather’s words and not wishing his voice to falter, paused for a moment to collect himself. Then he said: “You are indeed wise, dear Grandfather. The choice is clear now. Thank you for your advice, which I wholeheartedly wish to take.”

Murad stood up and kissed Nihad. Then he took Fuad by the hand and led the way into the garden. As Nihad passed Dilber Kalfa on his way out of the salon, she handed him the small box containing the cord. When they had gone, she went over to the window and watched as the four princes strode purposefully over to the high wall that skirted the seafront. She saw Nihad speak to a guard standing beside the sea gate; after a certain amount of gentle persuasion, he unlocked the gate and pushed it ajar just enough to allow Nihad to slip through onto the quay beyond. Nihad then opened the box and, after saying a prayer, tossed its contents into the water lapping at his feet.

“Bismillah,” she murmured. “May the suffering of the family of Murad have an end. May they know freedom, and may they find their destiny beyond the walls of this palace prison.”

One of my favourite things about writing that book was the research on orchards, the seasons of apple trees, the ways the fruit was harvested and what happened to it afterwards. Somerset apple orchards have such a rich history and tradition, and as I delved into that part of the novel it was lovely to see how many apple growers are now reviving old businesses or starting anew, using some of the old ways and wisdoms.The only thing that was missing from the novel was a character actually cooking the apples. For the life of me, I couldn’t quite persuade my heroine Violet (who runs away from her upper class London life to join the Land Girls at Winterbourne, my fictional apple orchard) nor the Land Girls (who are trying to survive farming life and something much darker threatening to tear them apart) to make their way into the kitchen and start baking – much as I love novels that include baking and cake-making!But in the spirit of all things apples, trees and orchard living, I’m sharing one of my favourite apple cake recipes with you today. It’s called “Krimmel”, a German cousin of the English “crumble”, and it was handed down to my mum by my German grandmother.I think all families have a family recipe that was such a natural part of growing up that you’re always taken aback when other people have never come across it. This is such a cake. It’s not new, not remotely fancy, adaptable a million and one ways and always delicious. There is practically nothing you can mess up with this cake, trust me, in fact, the messier and craggier the crumb-clumps, the more moreish the whole thing becomes.You can use any add-on (nuts or oats), any additional flavouring (rum raisins, anyone?) and, really, any fruit that decently holds up inside a pie (blackberries, plums, that kind of thing). Personally, I am a purist about my Krimmel and just go with the basic recipe below, but by all means, be bold and take this new and adventurous places. My mum would be proud of you.Krimmel: A sort of German Apple Crumble400 g flour 200 g sugar 250 g butter 100 g ground almonds vanilla and / or cinnamon to tasteca. 5 Apples (my mum uses Granny Smith or Braeburn) A spritz of lemonPreheat the oven to 180 degrees and butter & flour a 23 cm springform or other cake form. For smaller forms adjust the amount accordingly.Peel, core and cut the apples into smallish, flattish chunks. Toss through with a spritz of lemon.Combine flour, sugar, ground almonds, cinnamon and / or vanilla to taste. Drop the butter in pieces across the surface and work the whole thing into crumbs and clumps. Divide this amorphous crumb mass roughly into two thirds and one third. Pat the bigger portion into the tin, creating a layer that is still a nubbly with clumps and crumbs but works as a base for the fruit. Spread the apples across the surface and dot — messy is not only fine but recommended – with the remaining crumbs.Bake in the oven for 45-50 minutes. If it gets too brown before the time is up, lay a lose piece of foil over the top but don’t tuck it around.As anything in life, this only improves with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream slathered across the top, but it can absolutely hold its own exactly the way it is described here and it remains delicious for a few days.Enjoy!About Nikola Nikola Scott worked in book publishing for many years before she sat down at her kitchen table one day to start her first novel. Tony J. Selimi was not so fortunate. Meet the Authors:

Steve Petzinger first created the concept for Bob the Banana when he was just twelve years old. His mother kept the original version, and over the years, his family urged him to publish it. In 2020, he decided to finally take their advice.

Petzinger sought help from his close friend, Selia Akbar-Hussain, who has been teaching preschool for eight years. She has read hundreds of children’s books and is knowledgeable about children’s books content. After months of hard work, their dreams of publishing a children’s book came true.

Author Interview
How long did it take you to write Bob the banana?
- When I wrote it in the sixth grade, I can’t imagine it took me more than a couple of days. But turning the book from a classroom project into a professional publication has been a different story. It took the help from a good friend of mine, Sela How i Akbar-Hussain, and the expertise of professional editors and an illustrator to turn it into a final product that is ready for publication. All in all, the editing and illustrations took 6 months.
Do you have any other writing projects you’re working on?
- I am working on the Bob the Banana second book. To be continued…
Who is your favorite character in the book and why?
- Other than Bob, my favorite character is probably Arvid the apple since he is the first character that I created other than Bob.
What’s your favorite children’s book and why?
- My favorite children’s book is Dr. Seuss’ “I Had Trouble in Getting to Solla Sollew”. I loved the alliteration and I felt like I could identify with this character fighting against numerous obstacles and ultimately learning that he could handle them himself.
If you were to create another book about another/side character, who would it be?
- Arvid’s loyalty is something to be noted and recognized. I think that highlighting him would send a positive message to readers.
If they were to make a movie about this book, who would play Bob?
- Bill Murray (“What about Bob?”)
