Excerpts
People Pleasing isn’t Pleasing
[My Mentor advised], “Never enforce standards on your own children based upon what others will think of you. Hold your child to the principles of the Lord, not the standards of other people. By your example you will train them to be God-pleasers rather than people pleasers.”
After some serious soul searching, I had to admit the main reason I wanted well-behaved children is I wanted others to think highly of me. Which meant I was bringing glory to myself––not God. A godly mentor’s honest, yet painful, words convicted me of a sin to which I was completely oblivious. (One very good reason to invite mentors into your life, and my motivation for writing this book.) With my own tendency toward people-pleasing, I probably would not have recognized my wrong motivation until I ruined my children.
While having obedient children is a delight, you must evaluate the reason you want your kids to obey. If you find you are overbearing and controlling, you may discover it’s because your main motivation for wanting obedient children is so others will think you’re a good mother.
Control Freaks Raise Freaks!
As your son matures, rather than micromanaging his every decision, create an environment with opportunities for him to make choices and to sometimes fail. Whenever an infraction occurs, if you determine to see it as a chance to teach your son how to find his way back from choosing the wrong path, you’ll be less likely to take personal offense at his failure.
Rather than impulsively reacting to your son’s misconduct, carefully think through how you will respond before his next disobedient act. Being prepared will help you guard against saying hurtful words or acting in a manner that you will later regret.
