ï What was your inspiration for writing a Christmas romance set in Scotland?
Well, I am Scottish, and I spent a lot of time at Loch Lomond as I grew up. Scotland is hopelessly romantic anyway, but when you add in the snow we get in Scotland, that is just the icing – or frosting! – on the cake.
ï Christmas romances often promise warmth and comfort. How did you create that cosy feeling?
I think the focal point of the Sugar and Spice café lends itself well to doing just that. It’s a haven for people to meet up with friends and family, try new festive fayre and chat with their local café owner, as well as attend various themed activities in the evening. In the village of Winstanton, it’s all about community.
ï Is there a matchmaker in A Dash of Christmas Spirit?
There are probably two matchmakers! But the main one is Lara, but she’s not only a matchmaker. She’s there to pair everyone up with their perfect Christmas.
ï What three words best describe the ambiance of A Dash of Christmas Spirit?
Cosy, heartwarming, aspirational
ï Which character would you most like to spend Christmas with and why?
Jude – because he’s just lovely! He’s trying to do the best for his kids, despite going through his own grief, and he’s a great brother and has a good rapport with Niven and his sister-in-law, and also gets on really well with Agatha, who has contracted him to do some work at the stately home.
ï What are your own favourite Christmas romance books, films, or traditions?
Favourite Christmas romance books include most of Milly Johnson’s, Cressida McLaughlin’s and Sarah Morgan’s. However, Carole Matthews’ Calling Mrs Christmas is my all-time favourite.
Films – Miracle on 34th Street, The Holiday, The Christmas Chronicles, Elf.
Traditions – watching Christmas movies from about October onwards!! All of them – as many as my work schedule will allow. But always on Christmas Eve, even though my children don’t want to half the time (!), I watch Christmas movies. I’ve done it since I was a kid and used to go to my parents’ on Christmas Eve to watch Christmas movies with my dad, even as an adult – until I had my kids at 40!
ïWhat message would you like readers to take away from the story?
That at Christmas anything is possible, but also that we should take the time to slow down and spend time with those we love, and that the commercial aspect of Christmas is by far the least important.
