As Jo Fussner keeps the Marketplace humming, her heart dances with a joyous secret. Jo and Michael Wengerd, a shy nursery owner from a nearby town, have fallen hopelessly in love. When Michael buys a courting buggy, Jo is sure a proposal will follow. But she’ll have to work hard to gain her mother’s approval—because the widowed Drusilla Fussner is convinced that marriage will bring her daughter nothing but heartache.

To win Jo’s hand, Michael enlists his father’s help in convincing Drusilla to give the marriage her blessing—and perhaps even open her heart to new happiness of her own. . . . But just as Jo and Michael’s hope for their future grows, an even bigger obstacle looms. The Amish elders vote to forbid any maidel from working once she marries. Now Jo must choose between the beloved store she’s put her heart into, and the man she can’t live without. Conflicted, Jo will have to trust that anything is possible when true faith guides the way.

Read an Excerpt

Jo Fussner gripped the pew bench in her excitement, thrumming with joy as she gazed across the center of the room at Michael Wengerd. As newehockers, they had front row seats at Molly and Marietta Helfings’ double wedding, which was about to begin now that the church service had concluded. In his black pants and vest, with a white shirt that glowed in the March sunshine that streamed through the window, Michael looked so handsome and elegant that Jo still wondered what he saw in a bulky, big-boned woman like her. But the love shining in his gray-blue eyes as he returned her gaze had the power to make her feel beautiful beyond belief.

Michael might’ve stayed in Queen City over the winter to make things easier for me, but his face still reflects his deep feelings for me—his belief that we should be together. It’s a miracle even more special than springtime, Lord, and for that I thank You!

When Bishop Jeremiah Shetler smiled at Marietta and Molly, the brides rose from the pew bench. In their dresses of deep teal, adorned with aprons made of crisp white organdy, they looked fresh and lovely as they centered themselves before the bishop with their grooms on either side of them. Pete Shetler appeared as nervous as Jo had ever seen him—until Molly’s reassuring smile brought the dimples back into his playful grin. Widowed nearly a year ago, Glenn Detweiler offered his elbow to slender Marietta, who took it with a dreamlike sigh as he placed his hand over hers.

Lydianne Christner, another of the twins’ side-sitters, leaned closer to Jo. “It’s the moment we’ve all been waiting for!” she whispered happily. As the bishop’s fiancée, the pretty blond teacher was anticipating her own wedding in May, after school let out. On Lydianne’s other side, redheaded Regina leaned forward to share her excitement, as well. “And your turns are coming!” she put in. “Last year at this time, who could’ve believed that every one of us confirmed maidels would find the man of her dreams?”

The Crystal Beads, Lalka’s Journey

Written by Pat Black-Gould

Illustrated by Katya Royz

Ages 8+ | 40 Pages

Publisher: Purple Butterfly Press | ISBN-13: 9781955119207

Publisher’s Synopsis: A Star of David necklace or a rosary?

In 1939 Poland, a young girl is asked to give up one of these and accept the other without understanding why. However, what she must part with happens to be her most prized possession—a precious gift given to her by her father before he died.

The child’s mother then teaches the girl a “game” to prepare her for what is to come. As the Nazis invade the country, the mother is forced to make a heartbreaking sacrifice.

This beautifully illustrated picture book is loosely based on a true story. Although told through the eyes of a young girl, the book is written for readers of all ages. It also contains two study guides. One is for children, parents, and teachers. The other is for adults who may gather in places of worship, book clubs, and small groups. Discussion topics include themes of compassion, empathy, and diversity.

Pat Black-Gould, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist and an author. Her short stories have appeared in several literary journals and anthologies.

Many years ago, Pat heard a powerful story that haunted her until she committed it to paper. The Crystal Beads was first published in Jewish Fiction. net in 2020. The short story then won first-place honors in two writing competitions conducted by the National League of American Pen Women, Washington, D.C.

The first was an award by the Pen Women Florida State Association. She then received the Flannery O’Connor Short Story Award as part of the National Biennial Letters in Competition. Pat felt it important to bring the story to a younger audience. At that point, she rewrote it as a children’s book. She hopes that The Crystal Beads, Lalka’s Journey, will do justice to the story she once heard and carry its message to younger generations.

Pat’s writing explores topics such as compassion, tolerance, and diversity. She continues to examine these themes in her upcoming novel, Limbo of the Moon, written with her co-writer, Steve Hardiman.

This beautifully written and illustrated book will be emotional for parents and children alike. It was definitely the favorite of all the children’s books I’ve read this year. The powerful story is of a little girl and of the mother who saves her. With WWII upon her, this Jewish mother knows that she and her daughter are not going to be safe. A nearby convent is taking in children to protect them from the Nazis and this mother must prepare her daughter to go there.

The little girl isn’t named in the book and the author isn’t talking about war or Nazis, but adults know what’s going on. The little girl has to trade her Star of David necklace for rosary beads. Her mom tells her that it’s all a game and teaches her about the Catholic faith so that she can really appear to be of that faith if questioned by the Nazis.

This book is sad and tragic, but also triumphant! I highly recommend this children’s book.

The days when Caylie could function within society became fewer and further between. One of the more challenging moments happened at T.J. Max just before her next appointment with Dr. Fleisher. Caylie, Mom, and I went shopping to get a change of scenery.

I had explained to Caylie that she could only have one stuffed animal on the visit. Although she had repeated it to me before we went in—she could only buy one—she had two when it was time to check out. I asked her to put one back, and Caylie had an outburst. She took to yelling, and swatting at my hands, trying to reach the second stuffed animal.

The hardest part of an invisibility disability outburst is that the cashier was left frightened. While my Mom and I were used to the behaviors, others were not. I was able to get Caylie back to the car while Mom finished checking out.

By the time we reached Caylie’s appointment on September 4, I was fighting with my family, Caylie’s school, and anyone who dared to become an obstacle in my quest to help my daughter.

Caylie saw me as the evil mommy who didn’t let her have her way, and she took to throwing things at me, or trying to pull my hair out. While I knew I was strong enough to continue, living on fear and adrenaline takes its toll on physical and mental health.

“Morning, Tucker,” Rider said when he opened her door. “Captain Simms’s wife is
already here and has set up the perfect spot for the shoot.” Rider pointed toward the rear of
the van. “Animals in the back?”
“Yes. They’re all in crates.”
He opened the back doors then shook his head. “How did you survive the ride with all
that noise?”
“Found my happy place.” And one day she’d see Hawaii in person. She loosened Flo and
moved back so the dog could exit the van through the driver’s side.
“You know what happiness is?” Rider smirked.
“Hardy har-har.” Jalissa rounded the back to start unloading the animals. “Where am I
putting them?”
“Oh, don’t worry about it.” Rider cupped his mouth. “Young, Trent, Barns, come help!”
She wiggled a finger in her eardrum. “I think your voice carries well enough without you
“Maybe, but I have no idea where they are in the firehouse. Now you don’t have to
carry the animals. Plus, the guys already know where everything is set up.”
“Then I can leave?” She had a load of laundry she could do.
“Oh, no.” He tsked at her. “We need your assistance with the animals.”
Jalissa slowly inched backward but stopped when Flo nudged her. One…two… She could
do this. Be near the firehouse for help. She didn’t actually have to go inside, did she? Flo licked
her fingertips.
“All right,” Jalissa said slowly. “I’ll just stay out of everyone’s way unless I’m needed.”
“You’ll be needed.” He stared into her eyes.
She blinked slowly. What was going on with her? First thinking Rider was good-looking,
and now they were having some kind of moment. She needed to fix this real quick.”
