An Interview with the Kingswell Kid Detectives
Jen Weaver
Today, I sat down with my third and fourth favorite kid detectives. My first two are my sons, Dillon and Connor, but I didn’t mention that to Luka and Ember Fallon.
These eleven-year-old cousins recently started a detective agency, so I headed to their Detective HQ, the larger half of Ember’s garage, for the inside scoop.
I arrived with questions.
Knowing these two, I should have prepared to be interviewed myself.
Before I could ask anything, Ember inquired about my red and pink sneakers, my favorite color (purple), and whether I liked art. Luka asked if I’d take notes or record the conversation. He already had a notebook and pencil out. And they both wanted to know if I’d ever solved an actual mystery.
I have not.
Luka: That’s all right. You could someday. Maybe even shadow us on the next one.
Ember: Ohhh yes! Come with us!
Me: Maybe I will. Which leads to my first question. Who should I learn from? Which one of you is the better detective?
Ember: Me.
Luka looked at her.
Ember: Well, Luka’s better at most detective-ing. But still learn from me.
Luka: Because she seems creative, right? Like you? And good with people?
Ember: Ding, ding, ding.
Luka: We’re good at different stuff.
Ember: You can learn from Luka too. Or Gadget.
She motioned toward Luka’s chocolate Lab, a retired police K9 chomping on a chew toy in the corner.
Luka: I beat Gadget. Thanks. I think.
What’s your best detective skill—and what’s your partner’s?
Luka: Finding evidence and ID’ing patterns. Ember picks up people clues that I don’t.
Ember: Luka’s great at details and staying organized. Which helps because I live outside the box.
You walk into a room and know something isn’t right. What’s the first thing you do?
Luka: Figure out what changed. What’s missing, moved, or what doesn’t belong.
Ember: Look at everyone’s faces.
Luka: That’s not evidence.
Ember: Faces are totally evidence.
Besides solving mysteries, what do you do for fun?
Ember: Art! Stickers, drawing, painting. I love it all!
Luka: Skateboarding. Basketball.
I spotted Luka’s skateboard beneath the folding table.
Tell me about your latest case, The Mystery of the Missing Falls.
Ember: Okay, so our town is named Kingswell Falls—
Luka leaned back in his squeaky “detective” chair.
Luka: Get comfy. She’s starting way back at the beginning.
Ember: That’s where the best stories start. The waterfalls of Kingswell Falls disappeared over a hundred years ago. With hidden treasure too. No one could find any of it. So this guy—
She pointed at Luka.
Ember: —decided we should find both.
Luka shrugged.
Luka: Wanna get taken seriously? Crack a cold case.
Wow. A hundred-year-old mystery and treasure?
Luka: Yeah. We’re legit detectives.
He tapped his pencil on the table.
Luka: You’re sitting at Command Central. And you don’t even know the half of it. Our clients had secret clues, like a map from 1880—
Ember: And old journals from the town founder.
Luka: We had to go way out to the bluffs. We even rode horses.
Ember: Let’s skip that part.
Luka: She doesn’t like horses.
Ember: You know what I like? Secret weapons.
You had a secret weapon?
Luka: Yeah. But it’s not what you’d think.
Ember: Prayer.
Luka: I wasn’t excited about that at first. Turns out, talking to God really helped.
What happens when you pray for help and still aren’t sure what to do?
Luka: Start with what I do know. Then keep going and trust God to help like he says he will.
Ember: Keep talking to God. And stay frosty.
Stay frosty?
Ember: Pay attention. Luka taught me that one.
Pay attention to what?
Ember: How God answers. He cares about his kids. He just doesn’t always answer the way we’d expect.
Luka: God cares about what’s happening in our lives way more than I thought.
He paused.
Luka: Staying frosty gives me an idea.
Ember jumped up.
Ember: Frosted Flurries at Bun Intended?
Luka: Yep. That mint chip shake is calling my name.
And just like that, the Kingswell Kid Detectives abandoned Detective HQ—and their interviewer—for ice cream.
