MY REVIEW

Cute kittens fill the book, Alycat and the Cattywampus Wednesday. Alycat and her brother Bugsy live with their parents. One morning Alycat came down for breakfast, but her mother served dinner instead. Alycat was happy about it even though she didn’t understand the reason. When she got on the bus, the driver had taken the driving route backwards. All throughout her day everything was backwards. She didn’t understand all the changes, but was cheerful.

Alycat hoped that the next day would be back to normal. When she woke up thinking it was now Thursday, her dad said it was Wednesday. So, all the backwards events were nothing but a dream. Alycat showed her family and friends that she could accept change and have a great attitude.

I love this beautiful hardback book. It’s high quality design is attractive and the illustrations are so lovely. I love the message that is conveyed with Alycat’s positive outlook no matter what changes came her way.

The Memory Keeper of Kyiv

In the 1930s, Stalin’s activists marched through the Soviet Union, espousing the greatness of collective farming. It was the first step in creating a man-made famine that, in Ukraine, stole almost 4 million lives. Inspired by the history the world forgot, and the Russian government denies, Erin Litteken reimagines their story.

In 1929, Katya is 16 years old, surrounded by family and in love with the boy next door. When Stalin’s activists arrive in her village, it’s just a few, a little pressure to join the collective. But soon neighbors disappear, those who speak out are never seen again and every new day is uncertain.

Resistance has a price, and as desperate hunger grips the countryside, survival seems more a dream than a possibility. But, even in the darkest times, love beckons.

Seventy years later, a young widow discovers her grandmother’s journal, one that will reveal the long-buried secrets of her family’s haunted past.

This is a story of the resilience of the human spirit, the love that sees us through our darkest hours and the true horror of what happened during the Holodomor.

May we never forget, lest history repeat itself.

A share of proceeds will be donated to DEC’s Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal.

Author Bio –

Erin Litteken is a debut novelist with a degree in history and a passion for research. At a young age, she was enthralled by stories of her family’s harrowing experiences in Ukraine before, during and after World War II. Her first historical fiction title, drawing on those experiences, will be published by Boldwood in June 2022.  She lives in Illinois, USA with her husband and children.

My Review

How much can a human endure? In this historical fiction, Katya is thrust into the hellish nightmare of the Holodomor. Although I have only learned recently about this time when Stalin murdered millions of Ukrainians, I want to learn more. This book is a great place to start, because the author has done a lot of research to bring true history and culture to life.

The story of Katya and her family was so emotional, it’s hard to even find the words to describe the experience. The teenage girl marries her true love, while her sister marries his brother. Then Stalin’s henchmen set up a plan to take all of the food grown and leave the people to starve to death. Katya’s sister goes crazy after her baby was born, while Katya’s baby dies after birth.

Katya’s husband is killed because he was working in the rebellion and Katya and her brother-in-law are left alone to raise the baby. Katya’s entire existence is to keep the baby alive when, after stealing food, her sister gets the blame and is shot. The day after day horror is a real page-turner, as the reader is just hoping that there could be some good news.

The beautifully written book goes back and forth from the Holodomor to the present day. A family with a Ukrainian grandmother is finding out that she had a secret life before she came to America. You’ll also love the off and on love story in the present day.

Although this isn’t a book for youngsters, I recommend it because of it’s haunting depiction of what Ukrainians went through in the early 1930’s. And, I love how it shows that learning more about the past helps us to look forward to a better future.

MY REVIEW

Zinnia is a beautiful little pink girl. The only problem is that she lives in a golden world. All the people, even her parents, are golden. When Zinnia goes to school the children laugh at her and tell her that pink stinks.

Zinnia’s self-esteem sinks and she asks her parents about her color. Her dad told her about the Golden Prism that produced all the colors of the world. She set out on a journey to reach this place so she could have a color change. She wanted to fit in. Along the way she met other people that told her to enjoy her uniqueness, her sweet scent, and her ability to stand out.

My favorite part of the book was the artwork. The illustrations are so bold and the various colored characters made each page come alive. Children of the recommended ages 3-8 will love this and enjoy having it read to them. The book’s message is that no matter what people’s opinion is, that doesn’t make it the truth. It’s important to love our differences that make us unique.

Dash and Zoom: Little Miss Sneakypants Book Tours

ABOUT THE BOOK

Dash and Zoom: Little Miss Sneakypants

Written by Susan R. Stoltz

Illustrated by Melissa Bailey

Ages 1-5 | 32 Pages

Publisher: Lyric & Stone Publishing | ISBN-13: 978-1733759861

MY REVIEW

When you have two adorable puppies, you know that everyone will love the book. Dash and Zoom are friends and this story is about Dash being a Little Miss Sneakypants. Zoom is resting and Dash is restless. She wanders over to the darning basket and pulls out a lone sock. She likes to play with it and then leaving it where it doesn’t belong. Dash reminds her that those socks are not her own.

Dash continues to be sneaky. She turns the basket over and hides underneath it. The sneaky little dog tries to bring the basket over to where she has taken all the socks. She’s making a real mess. Zoom is getting more and more unhappy.

Dash realizes that Zoom is right and corrects her mistakes by putting all the socks and yarn back in the basket. After she does the right thing will Dash be happy again? Children will love this beautifully illustrated book!

Publisher’s Synopsis: Dash and Zoom are really good friends. But when Dash takes things that don’t belong to her, even Zoom’s ball, there’s a problem to be solved because not only is Dash taking things that don’t belong to her, but she’s also hurting Zoom’s feelings.

Kids often have a difficult time understanding that they shouldn’t take things that don’t belong to them. When we don’t rescue kids from mistakes and instead focus on the solution, it’s an opportunity to help them learn to make good choices. The illustrations are extremely engaging and it’s always fun to see how many things you can find under that precarious chair.

Dash And Zoom: Little Miss Sneakypants is written for young children who are learning social norms. It exemplifies good decision-making and helps kids solve problems rather than being ‘in trouble’ for making a mistake. If children are approached with the opportunity to fix what is wrong without fear of anger it often contributes to good decision-making skills all throughout their lives. These two dogs are so engaging that children will want to read the book again and again.

This is the story of two adventurous bears, their protective mama, mischievous bubbles, and a magical witch. Ignoring their mother’s wishes, Boo and Butter stray down the path toward Granny Grumblewitch’s house into a world of bubble-brewed danger. Granny holds their fate in her gnarled hands . . . will they return to the safety of their cave?

 Alejandria Kate wrote Bubble Trouble with the hope that Boo and Butter’s story shows children that truly loving parents mean only what is best for them . . . that any boundaries, warnings or admonishments are intended to protect, not to prevent them from having fun. Any deviation from the defined boundaries could result in unhappy consequences. Parents like Mama Bear know what is best, safest — and love them above and beyond anything else.

My Review

This is a charming story about Boo Bear and her brother, Butter Bear. Like all little bears, they love honey. They also love chasing bumblebees and don’t even mind getting stung, once in a while. Their mother bear went to town for a new hat and told them to stay in the yard. She warned them about the grumpy witch down the lane.

The witch was making giggling bubbles and some escaped and floated over to the bear’s house. Boo warned Butter to ignore the bubbles, but he couldn’t resist them. He followed them down the lane and Boo ran after. When Butter was led into the witches house, Boo went in to rescue him.

Then the witch came out. What was going to happen? Was she going to turn them into stuffed bears? Children will enjoy this charming book with whimsical illustrations. The obedience lesson is very good for children.

GENRE: Cozy Mystery

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Small Town. Big Murder.
The number one secret to my success as a bodyguard? Staying under the radar. But when a wildly public disaster and a dead client blew up my career and reputation, it turned my perfect, solo life upside down.
I thought my tiny hometown of Nowhere would be the ideal out-of-the-way refuge to wait out the media storm.
It wasn’t.
My little brother had moved into a treehouse. The obscure mountain town had decided to attract tourists with the world’s largest collection of big things… Yes, Nowhere now has the world’s largest pizza cutter. And lawn flamingo. And ball of yarn…
And then I stumbled over a dead body.
All the evidence points to my brother being the bad guy. I may have been out of his life for a while—okay, five years—but I know he’s no killer. Can I clear my brother before he becomes Nowhere’s next Big Fatality?
A fast-paced and funny cozy mystery series, buy Big Shot now to take advantage of the special pre-order price of .99 cents.
Murder mystery game included in the back of the book!
EXCERPT
I crossed to the oversized corkscrew and passed what had to be the world’s tiniest apothecary shop. At the giant coffee pot, I crossed the street to the park where I’d once played. I made a game of racing around the enormous, metal mushrooms.
Jogging across Main Street to the cannery, I slowed at the world’s biggest can of peas. My thudding heartbeat turned heavy.
A man in a simple gray wool coat lay sprawled against the giant green-and-white can, and my heart turned leaden. So Nowhere had homeless people too.
I hesitated before walking toward him. The temp had dropped pretty low last night. And he had no blanket. I didn’t want to wake a sleeping man, especially one who might be under the influence. And he’d have to be on something to curl up against the can like a dragon around its treasure.
Then I saw the knife . I stopped short and sucked in my breath.
He wasn’t a homeless man.
He wasn’t sleeping.
He was dead.
