Cassie stewed for a few minutes about his attitude. But stewing didn’t help. “I want to be friends, too, like
you said. So I promise not to make any more moves on you.”
He looked sideways at her. “You do, huh?”
“I do. I don’t want to hurt our friendship.” She was telling the truth about that, too. Having Evan in her life
mattered, even if there would be no more delicious kissing. “It’s important to me, Evan, and…and I think it
would be important to Josh, too. In fact,” she added as the brainstorm hit her, “we should do something fun
together. As friends.”
“What kind of something?” He sounded skeptical.
“I don’t know, like, a book discussion, or a festival, or a wine tasting.” She felt desperate not to lose him,
not to close the door to spending time together. She’d explore the reasons for that desperation later. Maybe.
“Those activities sound pretty date-like.”
“It’s all in how you approach them, right?”
He glanced over. “I guess so.”
“So if I find something like that for us to do…as sort of practice for being just friends…will you do it?” She
didn’t add “for Josh,” because that would be manipulative. But she really hoped he’d say yes.
She didn’t want to examine exactly why she hoped that with her whole heart.
He let out a sigh. “Sure, Cass. We can do something as friends. In fact… How about helping me talk to a
bunch of preschoolers this week?”
“You’re talking to preschoolers?”
He grinned, the first genuine smile he’d had on his face all day. “We both are. Since we’re friends. Be
ready, Tuesday at 9 a.m.”

Topic: Setting the Scene in Taiwan

Q: What was your inspiration for Kai the Dancing Butterfly? Why butterflies?

A: Taiwan has over 400 species of butterflies, 50 of which are endemic to the island! Taiwan is also home to the beautiful purple crow butterfly population, which makes up one of the planet’s largest butterfly migration overwintering congregation. My children and I adore butterflies, so I was inspired to write a children’s book about this unique butterfly species from Taiwan, where I grew up as a child.

Q: Fun facts about Taiwan you’d like to share?

-Taiwan is the size of Belgium but has twice as many people.

-Taiwan ranked as the eighth-strongest democracy in the world, according to the Economist Intelligence Unit’s new 2021 Democracy Index.

-Taiwan implements a National Health Insurance program which is considered one of the best universal healthcare systems in the world.

-Half a million people in Taiwan identify with a Taiwanese Indigenous tribe.

-Taiwan is home 400 butterfly species, 50 of which are endemic.

Q: Among all the locations featured in Kai the Dancing Butterfly, which is a favorite?

A: Sun Moon Lake is hands down a favorite, because I had spent my baby-moon there while pregnant! Also, while I was there I had carelessly left my purse at a spot near the lake, and a local picked it up and waited there for me for over an hour to come retrieve it. I’ve traveled to around thirty countries and honestly have never met anybody as nice as she was to a complete stranger!

Q: There are many animals in this storybook. Besides the butterflies, which ones are favorites?

A: The pangolin and Formosan Clouded Leopard are favorites. They are both also critically endangered. We hope this book will spark an interest in learning more about these majestic animals and about their protection.

Q: You grew up between Taiwan and California. What was it like balancing the two cultures at such a young age?

A: I attended kindergarten and first grade in California, then second to the eighth grade in Taiwan, then high school and college in the US.  It was a bit of a struggle when I was younger, moving between continents with such frequency. But it also laid the foundation for a bicultural, bilingual upbringing, and for that I’m very grateful.

Q: Tell us about your personal history with Taiwan.

A: My paternal great-grandfather was a journalist in Taiwan who aided the anti-Japanese colonial efforts. My maternal great-grandfather was a school principal in Taichung, and my maternal grandmother was a teacher in Taipei. My maternal grandfather worked at a bank, and his brother was a famous painter who held gallery shows. I grew up hearing all of their stories.

EXCERPT

From Holding Tight to Letting Go
For years I have loved watching trapeze artists. The love began when my then- eighty- nine- year- old
father came for a visit. Let’s go to the circus, we decided one day. That evening we watched five South
African trapeze artists—three fliers and two catchers. They danced in the air! The fliers soared and all
was dangerous until they found themselves caught by the strong hands of their partners. I told my
father that I had always wanted to fly like that, that perhaps I had missed my calling!
I am constantly moved by the courage of my circus friends. At each performance they trust that their
flight will end with their hands sliding into the secure grip of a partner. They also know that only the
release of the secure bar allows them to move on with arcing grace to the next. Before they can be
caught, they must let go. They must brave the emptiness of space.
Living with this kind of willingness to let go is one of the greatest challenges we face. Whether it
concerns a person, possession, or personal reputation, in so many areas we hold on at all costs. We
become heroic defenders of our dearly gained happiness. We treat our sometimes inevitable losses as
failures in the battle of survival.
The great paradox is that it is in letting go, we receive. We find safety in unexpected places of risk. And
those who try to avoid all risk, those who would try to guarantee that their hearts will not be broken,
end up in a self- created hell. C. S. Lewis wrote in The Four Loves,
To love at all is to be vulnerable…If you want to make sure of keeping [your heart] intact, you must give
your heart to no one, not even to an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries;
avoid all entanglements; lock it up safe in the casket of your selfishness. But in that casket— safe, dark,
motionless, airless— it will change. It will not be broken—it will become unbreak-able, impenetrable,
irredeemable…The only place outside of Heaven where you can be perfectly safe from the danger of love

is Hell.

In so many ways, the more we insist on control and the more we resist the call to hold our lives lightly,
the more we have to deny the reality of our losses and the more artificial our existence becomes. Our
belief that we should grasp tightly what we need provides one of the great sources of our suffering. But
letting go of possessions and plans and people allows us to enter, for all its risks, a life of new,
unexpected freedom.
How can we live with greater willingness to let go? Another step in turning our mourning into dancing
has to do with not clutching what we have, not trying to reserve a safe place we can rest in, not trying to
choreograph our own or others’ lives, but to surrender to the God whom we love and want to follow.
God invites us to experience our not being in control as an invitation to faith.

Victory can only come by letting go

It is with a life centered on our Lord that we can be Healed through the Power of Love. Amidst the trials, tribulations, and storms we experience with family, relationships, and friends, the Lord guides us if we surrender to His will, His purpose, and His plan for our lives.

With her heart scarred and filled with remorse and fear, she finds trusting, letting go, forgiving, and accepting the Lord’s will a challenge. Orlando’s life is mundane until Yasmin returns. His goal becomes helping Yasmin, convincing her to love and be loved, showing her how to be happy, and persuading her to overlook her past. My Review
Healed Through the Power of Love is a complicated book for me. Most of the book is about the life of Yasmin, who comes from a very cruel family. At every turn Yasmin is their verbal punching bag. Her sister and brother are beyond harsh towards her. Everything cruel and ugly that they can think up is said to her. They make up lies and spread gossip, smearing her name. They learned to do this by copying their parents.

Yasmin’s father died, but she didn’t know right away. He had thrown her out of the house years ago when he caught her and a boyfriend kissing in the house. He assumed what he wanted to and never asked her what had happened. Her mother was a horrid creature who mocked her, shamed her, and ostracized her. Then she blamed her for not coming to visit. The entire ganged up on her and it was horrible to read.

Yasmin’s mentor, Ani, kept telling her to calm down and not argue with them. She told her that she should stay with the family and pray for God to change things. Yasmin continued being abused and suffered from almost daily migraines. The stress caused her to begin losing her health. Instead of protecting her health, everyone was telling her to keep at the family relationships.

The end of the book will let you see if things got better for Yasmin.

Trigger Warning: Verbal, emotional, and physical abuse. This book contains family abuse in which the entire family victimizes one person. The 200 or so pages of continuous abuse can be triggering to those who have been an abuse victim.

About WHAT IF IT’S WONDERFUL?: AN INVITATION TO RELEASE YOUR FEARS, CHOOSE JOY, AND FIND THE COURAGE TO CELEBRATE

Publisher: Thomas Nelson (March 8, 2022)

Paperback: 240 Pages

Don’t spend your life practicing disappointment and rehearsing tragedy when you can experience God’s gift of joy and celebration today.

Author and marriage and family therapist Nicole Zasowski knows that it’s difficult to trust joy and find the courage to celebrate when you have endured seasons of disappointment and despair. When God has been your faithful anchor in the storm, does joy then leave you unmoored? Nicole reminds us that we can stay tethered to the hope of Christ in seasons of celebration, because even joyful days hold the learning, growth, and intimate encounters with Jesus that our hearts crave.

What If It’s Wonderful? offers a new perspective. With a compelling psychological and spiritual case for the importance of embracing joy and celebration, even when it feels scary, it will help you

  • identify common barriers and hesitancies to experiencing joy, debunk their lies, and overcome your fears,
  • confront toxic messages you have received about joy as you learn to see celebration as an avenue of growth and intimacy with God,
  • approach life with an expectant heart, a receptive posture, and courage to trust God’s good gifts, and
  • stay emotionally healthy and spiritually alive in seasons of joy and celebration.

Things don’t always have to be hard to find God and to stay close to him. Release your fears and accept his beautiful gift of joy and celebration.

About Nicole Zasowski

Nicole Zasowski is a licensed marriage and family therapist and the author of From Lost to Found. As an old soul who wears her heart proudly on her sleeve, she enjoys writing and speaking on topics that merge her professional knowledge, faith, and personal experience. Nicole lives in Connecticut with her husband and their three young children.

My Review

A Christian Spiritual Growth book, like this one, can be life-changing. I love that this book’s author gives us so much of her personal journey. It is so much better when the reader can relate to the topic, and Nicole does that throughout the book. It helps that I have so much in common with her in her miscarriage experiences. I could have written much of her book myself and found so much to have in common with her. The emotions and changes are very real and I love what she wrote and how it can really help anyone to come to the end of this journey with joy.

This is one of the best Christian growth books that I’ve read and I will be so happy to read more of her books. I would also love to have a workbook to accompany this book. I plan to share this book with many people that I know. Her writing is easy to understand and she explains complicated topics in a very clear manner. This book will challenge you to rejoice and celebrate all that God has done and is doing in your life.
