A Day in the Life of Larry and Roger, A Pair of Diabetic Feet

by Vicki Myhre

GENRE: Non-fiction, Self-help, Self-improvement

“When we get to the end of our day, we want to sit back and reflect on everything we did, and we want to know in our hearts that we did a good job being good diabetics for another day.”

A book for all ages, and whether you are diabetic or live with some one who is, this book is a valuable and educational read for everyone.

Larry the left foot and Roger the right foot are sure to delight and amuse you as they take you through a typical day in their lives. They show you how they strive to be the very best diabetics that they can be by living a healthy lifestyle every single day. As a result of dedication to their plan, they are certain that they will live longer, happier lives full of enjoyment and fun.

This is a multidimensional book featuring a short illustrated story that portrays a day in the life of a diabetic. On a whole different level, each page is full of great information for those who wish to dig a bit deeper into the whys and hows of simplifying diabetic life. It also includes many references, in a system that is built to help in teaching you how to find the answers to any questions that you may have.

If you have diabetes—or, for that matter, nearly any other chronic illness—exercise is one of the most powerful tools to help you control your weight and blood sugar. And it can help you feel great too.

The list of exercise benefits is long. Exercise helps control weight, lowers blood pressure, reduces harmful LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, raises healthy HDL cholesterol, strengthens muscles and bones, and reduces anxiety. Exercise can help regulate blood sugar and increase the body’s sensitivity to insulin. Both are important for people with diabetes.

Many studies have documented that exercise is a strong ally in treating diabetes.”

Getting a good amount of exercise is a primary component to our program. Roger and I make sure that we put our daily exercise at the top of our list of things to do. It will help improve our quality of life for absolute certain. Although it’s not always easy to get Roger going, he knows the importance of exercise and will eventually fall into place beside me with a grumble and a half smile.

We like to walk, swim, bike, hike, cross country ski, and golf. The two of us choose to stick to sports in which we feel in control, as that’s important to us. Therefore, we chose to stay away from downhill skiing. We’ll leave that to the adventurous soles. Today, we’re off to the pool once our breakfast settles in our tummies.

My Review

For Type 2 Diabetics of all ages, this is the first book to read after your diagnosis. This book has two heroes, Roger and Larry, the two feet of a diabetic person. They are both presented as the opposite of the other. Just like our own personalities, Roger would prefer not to exercise and eat right. Larry does everything right, just like we all desire to eat and exercise properly, but it’s often hard to actually follow through.

Having the two sides of our mind acted out by Larry and Roger, the reader will see that it’s normal to fight against our side that wants to avoid hard work and eating right. But, when they see all the reasons that a diabetic must protect their feet, they are more motivated to do what is needed to keep their feet protected and healthy.

This book has cute animated feet that demonstrate all the points in the book. The book also has green blocks throughout that give factual information. The entire book is easy to read and is useful for a long-term resource to refresh our knowledge of diabetic health tips and foot protection. This book is also important for a caregiver to read, so that they can make sure that they can help the diabetic person have the best health possible.

My Review

This is such an adorable book, and perfect for Christmas. Gingersnaps are a wonderful treat and the children in the book can’t wait to eat them. They come home, eager to taste the cookies, but find an empty plate and a trail of crumbs. The cute artwork follows the three as they go from room to room, thinking about who could have eaten the cookies. They find the usual suspects, like the cat and dog, but it’s someone else! Who could it be? Kids and grownups will love this story.

My unconventional organization method

When it comes to organization, most people use a planner, a wall calendar, or online scheduling tools. While I do own a planner for big events, my method for organizing my day-to-day tasks is…

Sticky notes!

My desk is constantly covered in them. On one sticky note, I write down all the tasks I need to do that day. As I complete each one, I cross it off and at the end of the day, I throw the sticky note away. On days where I struggle with motivation, I write down mundane things that I usually don’t think about like “eat lunch” and “take a bathroom break.” Even though I don’t need a reminder to do those things, it helps me to feel like I’ve accomplished things on the days where I feel down on myself. The fact is that in a single day, parents do a lot. We care for ourselves, cook, clean, change diapers, cook more, clean more, go to work, pay the bills, run errands, and then repeat without a break. Whether we acknowledge it or not, we do SO much. So, on my off days, I simply give myself credit for the things I would have done anyway because it feels amazing to throw away the completed sticky note at the end of the day.

A Picture of Christmas Reviewer Tour

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

A Picture of Christmas cover

This book is #4 in the Winter, Montana series. Winter, Montana sounds like the perfect place for a Christmas getaway. They have all the snow, mountain views, and wonderful events of a small town. Rhett’s family own a ranch and he is going home for the holidays to stay with his dad. He dreads leaving Seattle with all the great places and his job, but it looks like he’s not going to get the promotion he deserved. There’s a lot of bad blood in his extended family, so he never knows what to expect at home.

Then, we meet Olive, a relative newcomer to Winter. She loves everything about the town and has made it her own. The reader gets to enjoy a story we loved in You’ve Got Mail. The twist on this storyline is the sub-plot of some bitter relatives and the positive lessons learned about God and relationships.

This is a wonderful book and a quick read. If you want a feel-good, positive holiday read, you’ll enjoy it, too.
