Espouse: (v.) to take in marriage; to make a marriage permanent by court decree; the court-approved process by which couples may stay together beyond the legal 15-year term.

In the contemporary world, fifteen years is considered the legal life cycle of a marriage. If a couple wants to stay together (married), they must hire a lawyer and petition the court to become Espoused.

After 14 years of marriage, Sara and Thomas Healy are still in love. Their decision to go to court to be espoused permanently is a source of great embarrassment for their children. Avery is ready for the benefits of uncoupling, and Sam really doesn’t need the social stigma of parents who decide to stay together, on top of everything else. Lame! Their espouse attorney, Gwen Stevens, has other problems. The judge for the Healy case is her nemesis, Carly Abraham, also known as “the Wicked Witch of the Bench.” Judge Abraham was previously married to Gwen’s husband Dennis, from whom she uncoupled after the allotted 15 years. She hates espouse lawyers on principle, and seems to have an extra dose of dislike for Gwen personally.

While the Healys struggle through the espouse experience—trial separation, uncouple counseling, and ongoing financial burdens—Gwen has to deal with the judge and her own struggles at home. In this fight for love, who has the answers?

Excerpt

“But we don’t always get what we deserve, do we?” Maggie was watching him closely now, and she seemed to be choosing her words carefully. “Life’s not like that. God’s plan can be pretty mysterious. Sometimes bad things happen to us that we don’t deserve. Sometimes that flips around, and we get a blessing we haven’t earned. Like tonight.” She smiled. “I know I was kind of chilly with you when we left the school. I sure didn’t deserve for you to be such a good sport when I banged on your door at two in the morning, carrying a screaming toddler—who’s drooling all over your shirt, by the way. You’re actually a pretty great guy, Neil Hamilton.”

I used to be. He wanted to tell her that. He hadn’t cared much what anybody thought of him in years, but for some reason, he wanted this woman to know that once upon a time he had been a different kind of guy. The sort of guy she would have liked.

Instead he said, “That probably just proves you don’t know me any better than Oliver does.”

Publisher: Acorn Publishing

The last dragons in the kingdom were killed a half century ago. At least that’s what twelve-year-old Eliana has grown up hearing. Imagine her surprise when one morning in the forest she finds herself eye-to-eye with a young dragon named Winston who is just as terrified as she is. Overcoming her fear, Eliana reaches out to the shaking dragon and miraculously can understand what he is telling her just by touching his brilliant emerald green and turquoise scales. Winston says his father has been missing since the last full moon, and she vows to help. Together, they seek out the King for guidance, but upon reaching the castle they realize that short, frazzled King Halwyn has problems of his own. The kingdom’s treasure is missing and the tribute to the Overking is due in a few short weeks. If unpaid, Halwyn will lose his kingdom to the Overking’s feckless nephew. Elianna and Winston must work fast, discovering the gifts and courage within themselves to find the treasure before their kingdom falls into the wrong hands, and people and dragons perish forever.

About the Author

At six years old, Laura Findley Evans wrote her first story about a man named Brill who flew to the moon. When her teacher asked her to stand up and read it to the class, she learned just how powerful a story can be. A creative writing major in college, she has written many more short stories, some of which were published, and one that won an award. The Dragon and the Girl: Due North is her first novel. It began when her grandchildren said one night (when they were supposed to be sleeping), “Tell us a story.” And so she did. Laura would like you to know that whatever she writes must be true, whether it is real or not. She hopes you will discover the truth in this story. The Lord Blackwood Regency Romance Series Virtual Book Tour

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

Two beautiful stories of eternal love and redemption…

By Arabella Sheraton

Title: LORD BLACKWOOD’S VALENTINE BALL (Book 1)
Author: Arabella Sheraton
Publisher: Bublish
Pages: 90 (novella)
Genre: Regency Romance

BOOK BLURB:

In this romantic traditional Regency novella, Patience Cherwell is resigned to a life of spinsterhood. Therefore, when her young friend, the lovely Lorna Hartley, comes to stay for a London season, she decides the eligible, charming Lord Blackwood is the perfect match for Lorna. Granted, Lord Blackwood, at forty, is much older than the vivacious 20-year-old Lorna, but Patience is determined to help her young friend make a good match. So why isn’t she happy when his lordship and Lorna seem to like each other’s company? The problem is that Patience is already madly in love with his lordship! An unexpected invitation arrives for Lorna and Patience to attend Lord Blackwood’s Valentine Ball. This is the perfect moment for him to propose to Lorna. Mysteriously, a corsage arrives from an anonymous admirer. Who is it for? And what will be the outcome for the wearer at Lord Blackwood’s Valentine Ball? Patience and Lord Blackwood’s enchanting story continues in The Lady’s Revenge.

PRAISE

“Set in the era of grace and chivalry, Lord Blackwood’s Valentine Ball by Arabella Sheraton is the heart-warming novella prequel to the more adventurous novel, The Lady’s Revenge. Written with similar charm and panache of Jane Austen’s, Pride and Prejudice, this enchanting story captivates the reader and draws them into the vibrant life of Patience Cherwell. Patience’s loving and noble spirit is evident from the onset of the story; instantly capturing the reader. Despite the results that could lead to a lifetime of loveless solitude, Patience’s sacrifice of self for the love of a friend is gut-wrenching, yet profoundly noteworthy. This is a beautiful story of eternal love and redemption, and I highly recommend it to hopeless romantics.” – Amazon Reviewer 5 stars

Charles Edward Jasper, Lord Blackwood, was, in her opinion, the handsomest man she had ever met, possibly, the handsomest man in London. The first time he shook her hand had sent a shocking tingle radiating right through her body and caused her to blush so fierily that she was sure he must have noticed. He had held her hand for a few moments as he spoke to her, his touch producing such an alarming effect that her knees trembled as if they had turned to water. Patience had felt breathless and thought she might have gasped her greeting. He did not appear to have observed her awkwardness because by then he had turned to welcome Lorna and her ever-giggling friend, Miss Sophie Sutcliffe. Had he even really noticed her that first time? Perhaps the only reason he tried to engage her in social chat on subsequent occasions was out of politeness to her as Lorna’s hostess during her London sojourn.

My Review

I’m a big Jane Austen fan and was delighted to read Lord Blackwood’s Valentine Ball, because it was very similar. As I read various sections of the book, I was reminded of Pride and Prejudice, Emma, and Sense and Sensibility. There were even a few lines taken from some of Jane Austen’s beloved characters scattered throughout.

This was a very sweet and fun read. Patience Cherwell was a lonely thirty year old lady who had lost her parents, but was well taken care of. She was surrounded by a charming staff and Henrietta who was determined to coax Patience into finding a suitor. She was a determined matchmaker and loved to brag about all her successful matches.

Patience is a very shy young woman who puts everyone in front of herself. When Lorna Hartley’s parents ask Patience to guide their 20 year old daughter through her time in London society, Patience willingly does her best. She and Lorna have totally different personalities. Lorna is bubbly and immature, but social settings are fun and easy for her.

Patience spends quite a bit of time with Lorna and Lord Blackwood. Patience is convinced that Lorna is in love with him. Gradually, as she gets to know him, Patience is starting to fall for Lord Blackwood. She is so sad that Lorna has his heart.

Then comes the inviation to Lord Blackwood’s Valentine Ball. Patience doesn’t want to go because of the valentine theme, in which Lorna and Lord Blackwood appear to be heading for an engagement. But, Patience must accompany Lorna as her chaperone. What emotions await them all at the ball? Will Patience have an admirer? This sweet Regency Romance was a quick read with loveable characters and a few surprises.

Title: THE LADY’S REVENGE (Book 2)
Author: Arabella Sheraton
Publisher: Bublish
Pages: 186
Genre: Regency Romance

BOOK BLURB:

This engaging traditional Regency romance is the sequel to Lord Blackwood’s Valentine Ball. Miss Letitia DeVere decides that revenge is a dish best eaten cold when she returns to London after a two-year absence to find her former admirer Lord Charles Blackwood on the verge of proposing to Miss Patience Cherwell. Lord Blackwood’s Valentine Ball proved to be the turning point in his fledgling romance with Patience. Letitia is not the kind of woman who gives up easily, as Patience and Charles soon find out. She stops at nothing to achieve her aims. However, Letitia has a dark past, with secrets that threaten to return and destroy her newfound social success. When Charles proves less malleable than in the past, Letitia resorts to subterfuge, seduction, blackmail, and even violence to force him to propose. Will he see through her tricks and remain true to Patience, or will Letitia’s seductive wiles lure him back?

PRAISE

“The timing is one of the most wonderful things in this read, especially because of the various means of subterfuge and blackmail which are at play. Author Arabella Sheraton has a knack for timing her comedy and her suspense in just the right balance to keep that rompy pace going, just like authentic Regency novels should do. I can’t recommend this two-partner enough, or indeed the author herself and her other super-fun works. Readers with a modern mindset or a lack of historical knowledge might not fully ‘get’ the style, but if you’re someone that does, then you’re going to truly fall in love and want to keep stepping back into this world time and again, so give them a try!” – Amazon Reviewer 5 stars

Arabella Sheraton grew up reading her mom’s collection of Georgette Heyer novels, the queen of modern-day Regency romance, and of course, Jane Austen’s iconic Regency novels. Although Arabella’s literary background was in publishing and editing, she had never written a fiction book. Her first novel started out in response to her mom’s complaint that she had nothing new to read. That first Regency novel was The Dangerous Duke! Since then, Arabella has penned six more authentic Regency novels and a romance self-help guide to finding the right partner, with useful quotes by none other than Jane Austen. Arabella has branched out with a mash-up of genre in her latest work in progress. A murder-mystery, time travel, Regency romance coming soon!

“Where would you like to have the funeral?” asked Mr. Stephens. “There is an option to have it at the convention center.”

“That would be great,” said Barry. “Then we can have all his teachers and friends from school attend.”

“Okay, this is a book for flower arrangements and this one is for caskets and grave markers. Browse through to see which ones you would like,” Mr. Stephens said as he spread the books on the table.

Margie and Barry went through the books and picked the things that would best fit for Jason.

They came across the perfect casket. The casket had a storm blue exterior with a spruce blue interior and a football symbol inside, quoting a Bible verse.

After they came up with a decision, Margie wanted to go back upstairs.

“Barry, can you help me back upstairs?”

“You sure you don’t want to hang out with your mom and Burnie?” Barry posed as they walked up the stairs.

“No, I’m not up to it,” Margie said as they continued to the bedroom. “Let Mom and Burnie figure out the program for the homegoing service.”

Barry laid Margie down on the bed and sat beside her.

“Are you sure you want your mom and Burnie to do the program?” asked Barry.

“Yes, just make sure they leave room for Coach Mackey, Principal Jenkins, and his teammates to say a few words.”
