My Review

In the second book about Kayla: A Modern-Day Princess, we find Kayla washing dishes and looking out the window. As she’s busy washing dishes in her bright tutu, she sees someone high up in the tree. It bothers her that someone is up in the tree and she goes outside to investigate. She yells to the person in the tree and wants them to come down before they break a bone. Then, a little boy jumps down to the ground.

Kayla doesn’t know this child and asks him his name. He tells her that he is Tommie Leigh and that he is new to the neighborhood. He says that his parents are newly divorced and he is living with his dad. He’s not sure, but hopes to see his mom in the summer. Kayla introduces herself as Kayla the Princess. They talk a lot and Tommie says that he sees a therapist because his mom is not around. Kayla says that dance is her therapy. Tommie says that football is also his therapy. Before Tommie rushes off to football practice he volunteers to help Kayla wash dishes.

They become friends and Kayla tells him that he can come everyday to wash dishes at 4 o’clock.

What if everyone makes fun of her? Will Hannah be brave enough to perform, or will she run off stage like she did at rehearsal? Meet the Author:

Christine still remembers the butterflies in the pit of her stomach as she performed traditional Korean fan dances as a 12-year-old growing up in Southern California. She never dreamed that over 30 years later, she would be channeling her inner fan dancer to write Hannah’s story. Christine is a second generation Korean American wife and mother of two, living in San Diego.

Christine loves telling stories for a living, which started with a 15-year career in TV news and continues today in public relations. She is the winner of six news Emmys and multiple PR awards. Christine was always an avid reader, but wished there were more Asian American book characters she could relate to (besides Claudia Kishi from The Babysitter’s Club). So she decided to create her own! Christine also enjoys singing karaoke, photography, and baking. You can learn more about Christine at www.christinepaik.com

Zero. That’s how many suitors Cora “Too Tall” Taggart’s entertained in her nineteen years. That is, until her father corrals a man nearly twice her age needing a mother for his children. However, Cora’s heart aches to find true love with a man who would embrace all of her misfit qualities.When Trigg Gentry discovers Cora in a back alley, using his horse as her own personal writing desk, sparks fly between them. While he searches for his runaway sister, Trigg crosses paths once again with Cora on a steamer bound for St. Louis, and neither Trigg nor Cora can deny their blossoming relationship.But Trigg’s unexpected exit from Cora’s debutante cotillion comes under suspicion. The guests’ jewelry is missing, and he’s linked to a murder case. Cora fears these accusations will make it impossible to avoid her father’s arranged marriage. And to make matters worse, her heart belongs to the man now pegged as a criminal. How can Cora convince her father that Trigg isn’t involved in either crime when all the proof points straight at him?

Obviously, Cora is in a tight spot. She’s being pushed into an unwanted courting/marriage situation by her father, yet she really wants to fall in love with someone who sweeps her off her feet. To add insult to injury, she’s become the focus of the local busybodies’ gossip, who love to chitter about her glaring failings. But Cora gets a chance for a once-in-a-lifetime trip to visit a cousin, and a whole new world opens to her. She begins to discover who she is and what she really wants.Trigg Gentry, a Kentucky horse and mule breeder struggling to keep his family together and is searching for his runaway younger sister. But when he meets Cora, the sparks fly. Yet, he can’t even contemplate what this attraction could mean. He must tend to family issues. But his plans go awry and then…he finds himself in a heap of a mess. His dreams of finding his way back to Cora and his future suddenly look very dim.Goats, pineapples, ball gowns, and even a shootout find their way into this story and you’ll have to read it to find out how this all fits together into a sigh-worthy happily-ever-after.

KAYLA: A MODERN-DAY PRINCESS Book Series Tour Giveaway

My Review

Kayla is a sweet little girl and this story is the first part of a five-book series. Kayla lives with her mother and father. Her mother works late many nights and Kayla doesn’t always get to see her at bedtime. This one night, her father lets her wait up for her mother. Kayla imagines that her mother will bring her a present.

When her mother arrives home, Kayla gets up and hears her mother at the stairs. She jumps quickly back in bed before her mother enters the room. Kayla asks her mother if she will get a present. Her mother tells her of a big promotion she has received at work and Kayla is thrilled that her mother’s hard work has paid off. Then, her mother does give her a present. She places a shiny tiara on Kayla’s head and tells her how she is a princess who has a great life ahead.

Kayla sleeps with her tiara on her head and dreams of all the beautiful life she has ahead of her. This is a positive book about family, hard work, and dreams of a wonderful future.

Zebra’s Day Out Review Tour

Zebra's Day Out Banner
Zebra's Day Out Cover

Zebra’s Day Out

by Susan Polites and Gabrielle Scully Illustrated by Rex Patrick

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:   Children’s
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Zebra is excited when he hears that he will be going out to the cafe with Gabrielle and Gran. But there is a lot that Zebra still has to learn about days out. Is a cafe anything like the circus in the picture book? Will he like the food there? Will there be playing?

Extract

Gran and Gabrielle put on their hats and their sunglasses, and they walked to the café. Gran pushed the stroller, and Zebra rode on the top. He was very happy to be outside in the sunshine.

“I wish I was big and strong so I could push the stroller,” he thought. “I would go much faster than Gran!”

They came to the café and sat down at a table. The waiter came, and they all said what food they wanted. “The food will come soon,” said the waiter and moved on. Zebra was cross. He wanted his food NOW. Rainbow didn’t mind waiting, as long as she could have cuddles with Gabrielle while she waited.

Finally the drinks came. The waiter was carrying the milkshakes and coffee on a tray. There was a plate of muffins too. Zebra thought the waiter looked like the circus juggler in the storybook.

“I want to be a juggler too!” he thought.

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

Susan Polites is a freelance story-writer, and her ten-year-old granddaughter Gabrielle Scully likes writing stories too. When they spend days together they often share in the adventures of Gabrielle’s toy-friends. During the pandemic lockdown in Melbourne they were unable to meet in person, so they decided to work together remotely and write down some of the toy-friends’ adventures. Gabrielle’s great-grandfather Rex Patrick, an architect and artist, had done a series of illustrations when he first heard about the adventures, and Gabrielle added some of her own drawings to make the story into an early-childhood picture book, and a family project.

My Review

Gabrielle’s mother will be out for a little while, so Gran comes over to stay with him. Gabrielle wanted to bring his favorite toys when they all headed out for the day. Zebra was the most important toy, but sometimes he caused trouble. And, this time was no different.

At the cafe, Zebra caused trouble by throwing the water in the air and being naughty. Gran paid quickly and they all went to have a picnic outdoors. This was much more pleasant, because Zebra had grass, which was what he wanted. Children will love the story of the child and his favorite toys and the imaginative tale of their adventures.

More than a great book for Christian coaches…

By Tom Roy

Title: SHEPHERD COACH
Author: Tom Roy
Publisher: Tall Pines
Pages: 132
Genre: Christian / Nonfiction / Coaching

BOOK BLURB:

There are few titles as honored as “Coach.” Players often take on the attitudes and swagger they see in a coach. Coaches are leaders, role models and authority figures all rolled into one. Receiving such a title is one thing… measuring up to the accolade is another. This book will attempt to help us all become better at our honored position of “Christian Coach” by examining our calling, motives, and processes. The workbook will ask questions and give ideas that will help us lead the men and women given to us in a way that models how Jesus would define “winning.” A book for coaches from little league to the major leagues!

HELLO FELLOW LEADERS OF MEN AND WOMAN! NO MATTER WHAT LEVEL OR SPORT YOU ARE COACHING, YOU ARE LEADING FUTURE LEADERS. THEY COME WITH A VARIETY OF BACKGROUNDS, ATTITUDES, PERSONALITIES, AND ABILITIES. YOUR RESPONSIBILITY AS THEIR COACH IS TO HONE THEIR INDIVIDUAL ATHLETIC SKILLS AND MOLD THEM INTO THE BEST ATHLETES THEY CAN BE. YOUR GOAL IS TO TEACH THEN AND NOT SETTLE FOR GOOD, BUT STRIVE FOR BEST.

AT EVERY LEVEL THERE IS PRESSURE TO WIN. HOPEFULLY, COACHES OF YOUNG ATHLETES ARE ABLE TO FOCUS MOR ON TEACHING THE FUNDAMENTALS OF THE SPORT. HOWEVER, PARENTS AND FANS WHO WANT THEIR ATHLETE TO SUCCEED CAN PUT PRESSURE ON COACHES TO WIN, EVEN INSULTING AND THREATENING THE COACHES.

AT THE UNIVERSITY LEVEL, JOB SECURITY OFTEN DEPENDS ON THE NUMBER OF WINS. PRESSURE CAN COME FROM THE CONFERENCE, THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR, OR THE INSTITUTION ITSELF.  AT THE PROFESSIONAL LEVEL, THERE IS A PRESSURE FROM OWNERS AND FINANCIAL BACKERS TO PRODUCE A WINNING TEAM BECAUSE WINNING EQUALS PROFIT. THERE IS ADDED PRESSURE OF THE MEDIA, WHICH ANALYZES AND SCRUTINIZES EVERY DECISION OF THE COACH.

COACHING IS A HIGH CALLING AND IT COME WITH MUCH PRESSURE AND HIGH DEMANDS. BUT IS THERE MORE TO COACHING THAN TRAINING ATHLETES TO ACHIEVE ATHLETIC SUCCESS?  WHAT DOES IF MEAN TO BE A SHEPHERD COACH? CAN THE LEADERSHIP STYLE OF JESUS BE APPLIED TO COACHING? WILL IT HELP OR HINDER ATHLETES TO SUCCEED? IS IT EVEN POSSIBLE IN AN ENVIRONMENT WHERE OTHERS HAVE NO INTEREST IN ANYTHING BUT WINNING?

LET’S DIVE INTO THIS ISSUE. ALTHOUGH THIS BOOK WILL NOT ANSWER EVERY QUESTION ABOUT COACHING, IT WILL GUIDE OUR THINKING INTO MORE THAN JUST THE X’S AND O’S OF THE SPORT.
