Author Interview –

  1. You write lesson-based books. Why is incorporating a lesson into a book important to you?
Lesson-based books teach children about the world around them. Having a conversation with a child about a difficult topic can be tough. Many times, children get defensive and feel they are getting in trouble. Books are the perfect tool to teach these lessons without feeling forced. Children can read about a situation a character faced, and adults can role play with them about how that character reacted, and what they would have done. They walk away having read an entertaining story and learning a valuable life lesson. Win-win.
  • How can we encourage our kids to read more?
There is so much joy to be had from a good book. Books spur our imagination, take us to other worlds, make us laugh, cry, and teach us so much about life and the world around us. Plus, reading provides a critical foundation for success in school and in life. Fostering a love of reading early in life is important, and the best way to do it is to read together to your children, routinely.
  • Besides reading books the traditional way, with the rise in technology, what are other ways in which kids can read?

I love listening to audio books. Like books, audiobooks create a shared experience between a parent and child. Plus, they make a reading experience more interactive, as actors and actresses perform the stories in various voices. Audio books are also convenient, as families can enjoy them together on road trips, while doing household chores, etc.

  • Are there any reading apps you’d suggest for kids?

My kids really enjoy Caribu, an interactive reading platform/video calling app where they can read with their family and friends. This app was our “go to” during the onset of the coronavirus pandemic.

  • What are your favorite books to read with your own kids?

We are big fans of “The Day the Crayons Quit” and “The Day the Crayons Came Home.” My kids never seem to get tired of oldies but goodies, like “We’re Going on a Bear Hunt.”

Ever since she was a child, Audrey wanted her life to be extraordinary. But as the daughter of a viscount born in late fourteenth-century England, the only thing expected of her was to marry—until an act of malice by her sister, Maris, four years ago damaged her face and her prospects. Though Maris was sent away, twenty-year-old Audrey is still suffering the scars of her sister’s cruelty. When her father announces his plans to marry off his damaged daughter and bring Maris home, Audrey decides to flee in search of her true destiny.

However, life outside her home is dangerous, and she soon finds herself attacked, sick, and in desperate need of help. She is taken in at Dericott Castle to be nursed back to health. While there, she decides to keep her identity a secret and work as a servant in the castle. But she doesn’t count on falling in love with the young and handsome Lord Dericott, who lost his arm several months earlier and bears scars of his own.

Meanwhile, Edwin—Lord Dericott—is curious about the new, well-educated servant’s identity. All he knows is that he’s quickly becoming smitten with her. When the man Audrey’s father wanted her to marry comes looking for her, she and Edwin must make life-changing decisions about what to believe and whether or not love is truly worth trusting.

My Review

This book is the story of a young lady named Audrey, who grew up as the traumatized daughter of a Viscount. Because her mother died in childbirth, Audrey and her big sister Maris, were not given motherly love and nurturing. The nanny and father showed favoritism to Audrey and Maris learned to hate Audrey. Maris’s hate grew so strong that she blamed Audrey for all her problems and became mentally ill. She was violent to Audrey and eventually tripped her so that she would fall into the fire.

Audrey was badly burned on the side of her face and was very ashamed of her scars. Her father had initially tried to marry her off to Edwin ( a potential earl), but her scars made the father pull away. He then tried to marry her off to a much older man, and Audrey was horrified. Maris, who had been temporarily placed in a convent, was home and quietly threatening Audrey with greater harm. That night, Audrey ran away as she was terrified of her sister’s plans.

Audrey was only a teen and very naive. She was robbed of her horse and money along the way of her escape. She almost reached a castle, but was afraid and feel down next to a tree. By chance, someone from the castle found her and brought her inside, and the housekeeper nursed her back to health. Audrey pretended to be a nobody and begged the owner of the castle (Edwin) to let her be a servant. She became a servant to hide her identity, being afraid that they would send her back home.

Maris comes after Audrey and brings a huge and loyal warrior with her. Maris is basically a pyschopath and kidnaps Audrey and later Edwin, too. Maris threatens to kill them both as they are trapped in the woods. They pray with all that is in them for God to deliver them. Will they survive? Will Audrey be tortured and damaged more by her sister’s hand? Will God answer their prayers? Will they end up together?

This book has so many dangerous events, twists, and turns! I enjoyed reading about Audrey and Edwin and how they looked to the Bible and their priest for guidance. This clean romance is filled with heart-pounding adventure.

“Hey, Bachmann. Good to see you.” Miles gave her a smile as he passed through with Duke. “You, too, Miles.” Toby wagged his tail but held true to his training and didn’t try to smell the other dog as they followed Miles through the entryway and second set of doors. They rounded the barricade blocking the entry from the escaping people and stopped in the lobby where the crowd dwindled to a trickle as the remaining visitors exited. “I’m glad the sergeant called the Phoenix K-9 agency to bring you in, too.” Miles’s green eyes pulsed with his charac¬teristic insatiable energy. “Nick is out with an injury.” “Oh, no.” Heavy blow to the MPD Bomb Unit, losing the K-9 star of their most experienced detection team. “Is it bad?” “Just a sprain. Training injury. I’m glad we have backup now with your new partner.” Miles grinned at Toby. “Me, too.” Relief washed through her. Maybe Miles understood why she had left MPD’s bomb squad to join the private K-9 security and detection agency owned by Phoenix Gray. “So what have we got here?” Miles dropped his smile. “I was told the threat indicated an intention to blow up the dam, so there could be one or more devices anywhere in the building. Or in the dam itself.” Nerves twisted her insides. She’d hoped the target was the new visitor center, not the actual dam. She swallowed hard. “Wouldn’t that cause flooding?” “Probably. The safety supervisor for the dam is supposed to meet us—” “That’s me.” The masculine voice with a hint of roughness singed her ears. It couldn’t be… “Sorry to be late.” She turned to see the source of the voice. “I was overseeing the evac…” Remington Jones stood six feet away, his sentence dying off as his gaze locked on her face. He’d grown a closely trimmed beard and his golden brown hair was longer on top, but there was no change in those un¬mistakable chocolate brown eyes or the grin that slowly curved his mouth. “Bristol Bachmann.” The sound of her name on his lips stirred her nervous stomach as though fish decided to take a swim in the tension pooling there. “You know each other?” Miles cut in like a life preserver. “Very well.” Rem gave her a too-familiar grin, as if they were still dating and she hadn’t learned his true character. She tightened her abs, forcing away her silly schoolgirl flut¬ters. She may have fallen for him six years ago, but she never made the same mistake twice. Apparently, she needed to make that clear. “You’re in charge of dam safety?”

Book Excerpt:

What is the answer?

What will prevail?

Will it be the red dot?

Or will the cat win the tale?

My name is Socks,

and much to my delight,

I chase a red dot

almost every single night.

It travels over bed sheets

and runs across the floor

while I chase to my heart’s content

thirsting for more!

By day I sleep;

by night I chase

when my human comes home from work

and pulls out the laser post-haste!

I hear the clicking of the button

and race into the room

to run after that red dot–

look at me zoom!

My Review

I had many cats when I was a child. We always had at least one cat in our house and were always provided with many hours of entertainment. This book of poetry about cats is also very entertaining. All the cats described in the book have different personalities and activities. The author writes lovely rhyming poems about her cats. When I read the poems I could just picture the cat and smiled thinking about the often naughty things that they get into every day.

These poems will be enjoyed by readers of all ages. I think it would be fun to read them aloud to your children, too. Homeschool moms would enjoy doing this as an introduction to poetry. There are so many cute poems, but my favorite is about the cat who makes a quacking sound!

My Review

Finding a book that’s hard to put down is one thing, but Crazy for You will also have you cheering for Veronica, Tiago, and Peter all the way! This is a wonderful book filled with drama, faith, and love.

Ronnie (Veronica) and her younger brother have moved to Deep Haven to escape the big city life. Ronnie has taken custody of Tiago in order to keep him out of foster care or worse. The city is filled with gangs and drugs, and Tiago is getting too old to be left hanging around those kids who will drag him down. So, Ronnie has taken a job with the Crisis Response Team in Deep Haven. Starting over is hard, but she is determined to help her little brother and put him first.

Her new colleague is Peter Dahlquist, who is a handsome and single guy who feels it’s his job to please everyone. Ronnie’s rough exterior takes time to break through, but she and Peter get to know each other and develop feelings. But, living in a small town has a way of causing them a lot of trouble. Peter is a Dahlquist and also related to the Zimmermans. These two families are always in competition and have many stubborn members.

In this book the two families are fighting over a specific property that they want control of so that they can have a business there. Unfortunately, Peter is on the council and will have to vote for one of the family’s proposals. He’s having a hard time, because both sides are determined to get their way. In comes a third cousin, Vivien, with a third option that will maybe give Peter an out. She has proposed that the property be used for a Youth Center. Peter and Ronnie know that this is the best plan, but how will the town be convinced.

Peter can’t convince his family or the town. The families are both angry with him. He even tries to meet with them in the church, but it doesn’t stop their anger or screams. The church’s pastor gives Peter some advice about what the Bible says in this situation. Peter wants to do what’s right. When the council meets again, he again tries to sway the crowd of angry townsfolk, but then something horrible happens. You’ll have to read the rest to find out what will happen next.

This book contains many believable Christian discussions. It’s not just a book with a few Bible verses scattered around. The characters have real experiences with God and the prayers and struggles are portrayed in a way that readers can understand. I highly recommend Crazy For You for it’s grace-filled message. It’s also a very entertaining and clean romance. I look forward to reading more in the Deep Haven series of books.
