ABOUT THE BOOK

Simply West of HeavenTitle: Being West is Best Series: Ginnie West Adventure #4 Author: Monique Bucheger Publisher: True West Publishing Re-release Date: 2020 Genre: Middle-Grade Contemporary Fiction Twelve-year-old BFFs, Ginnie West and Tillie Taylor, are matchmaking geniuses. Together, they maneuvered Ginnie’s widower-dad into proposing to Tillie’s divorcee-mom. Sweet! Certain they are well on their way to sisterhood, each girl is floored when Tillie’s lousy-excuse-for-a-father puts in an appearance after a six-year absence. Too bad “lousy dad repellant” doesn’t come in a can. Even though Tillie’s dad has sobered up and is determined to make amends, Tillie would rather he just disappear again. If he stays, “Operation: Secret Sisters” may need to be renamed “Operation: Not Gonna Happen.” If that’s not bad enough, the biggest bully in seventh grade comes over often and wishes he could call the West’s farmhouse “home.” When the bully’s abusive dad shows up as well, Ginnie thinks it’s time to change her family’s motto from “When you’re here, you’re family” to “There’s no more room at the West’s.” PURCHASE LINKS*: Goodreads | Amazon

Excerpt

Anne of Green Gables is filled with rich spiritual themes and truths. Anne’s story provides a gentle allegory for God’s redemptive, adoptive plans for each of us. Not only is she adopted, as we are adopted into God’s family when we place our trust in Jesus as our Savior, but she grows and flourishes in a loving family, just as we do as part of the Body of Christ.
Even Anne’s arrival at Green Gables—by a “queer mistake”—is later recognized as a divine appointment. Matthew says, “She’s been a blessing to us, and there never was a luckier mistake than what Mrs. Spencer made—if it was luck. I don’t believe it was any such thing. It was Providence, because the Almighty saw we needed her, I reckon” (Chapter 34). And Marilla tells Anne, “I don’t know what I’d do if you weren’t here—if you’d never come” (Chapter 37).
Anne’s own journey of faith is central to the plot as she learns to pray, attends church, goes to prayer meetings, sings in the choir, contemplates morality and theology, and practices curbing her temper. Surrounded by wholesome friends, mentors, and role models, Anne’s faith blossoms and her character develops.

My Review

There are so many wonderful Christmas books for children. In the Nick of Time is a great new children’s book that is filled with the true spirit of Christmas. The story is about a little boy named Nick who lives with his parents. He’s a typical little boy at Christmas time, who is excited about what he wants for Christmas. He’s impatient and a little spoiled. His parents want to teach him how to care about others. At the beginning of the book he is acting self-centered and rude. But, after a letter shows up at his house with Saint Nick’s address, he knows that the mailman has made a mistake.

He reads the letter with his parents and discovers that a little boy in his school wrote the letter. The little boy is living in a homeless shelter and wants Santa to bring his mother a job. After trying to help the little boy at school he and his parents organize a job fair and toy drive. Will he be able to really help this needy family? Will he continue to be self-centered or will things be better in the Nick of Time?

Meet the Author:

Deirdre “Deedee” Cummings believes literacy is a fundamental human right. She is the founder of Make A Way Media, It Pays to Read & the Louisville Book Festival, as well as, an attorney, therapist, and CEO of Abi Behavioral Health in Louisville, Kentucky. Abi is an intensive therapy agency that works to prevent the placement of children in out of home care, such as foster care, hospitalization, and incarceration. Deedee attended Bennett College in Greensboro, North Carolina, one of only two all-female Historically Black Colleges in the country. After graduating from Bennett, she earned a master’s degree and a law degree from the University of Louisville. All of her writing focuses on sharing inspiring messages that remind us all it is never too late to begin again. Deedee encourages the children she works with to write as a way to process emotions, document their journey, and express themselves more clearly. In addition to presenting on multiple topics around the country, Deedee donates hundreds of books and volunteer hours every year to families, children, churches and the local school system. She is excited to announce the launch of her tenth children’s book, This is the Earth. The inspiration for this book came from overwhelming negative media coverage about race relations in our country and across the world. This is the Earth is a book about peace, respect, and diversity inclusion: a message that must be heard and repeated often. She and her husband Anthony live in Louisville with their three children Kayla (an actress in New York), Anthony (a college student and athlete), and Nick (in elementary school).
